The Hot List
- Trading Cards: To use an old Gorilla Monsoon cliché, collectors have been chomping at the bit for 2014 Topps WWE Chrome cards ever since the product was announced in January. Topps released the cards earlier this week, giving collectors the first wrestling Chrome cards since 2007.
Topps Chrome is annually one of the most anticipated brands in football and baseball, and wrestling collectors appear to be just as excited. Chrome is more of a premium product than regular Topps WWE products; each 24-pack hobby box sells for roughly $90 and delivered one relic and one autograph OR additional relic. Each box also guarantees eight refractors, including various colors with different serial numbering.
The thing that really has collectors buzzing is that wrestlers actually signed the cards for this product for the first time since 2005. Most Topps WWE products use sticker autographs. There are 10 autographs in the set, with Roman Reigns being the most popular thus far. Other signers include Fandango, Kane, Honky Tonk Man, and Natalya.
Relics include pieces of t-shirts worn by Bray Wyatt, Goldust, John Cena, and Daniel Bryan. The most sought after of the 16 relic cards features a swatch of a hat worn by The Undertaker in 2006. There are also 20 mat relics featuring a piece of canvas from the 2014 Royal Rumble.
The popular Commemorative Championship Plate cards return with a few new wrestlers and different belts for most wrestlers. For instance, the Daniel Bryan card in 2014 Topps WWE featured a replica U.S. Title; the Chrome version includes a replica WWE Title.
A full review of 2014 Topps WWE Chrome, including a box break courtesy of Topps, will be published next week.
- Action Figures: Kids and collectors are starting to find some of the most popular WWE toys of the summer in their local stores. Mattel Elite Series 28 includes the first Elite-style figures of Bray Wyatt and Demolition Crush, along with new figures of John Cena, Big Show, Daniel Bryan, and Triple H. Battle Packs 28 includes the first figures of Luke Harper and Erick Rowan (with rocking chair), along with the second figures of the Usos and a new two-pack of A.J. Lee and Big E.
Battle Packs 29 should arrive in stores this summer, with two-packs of Los Matadores, Cody Rhodes and Goldust, and C.M. Punk and Ryback.
Mattel and Ringside Collectibles also recently confirmed new figures that should be released in late summer or early fall. Elite Series 30 will feature the first Mattel toy of Lex Luger, along with new figures of the Road Warriors, Ryback, Brock Lesnar and Batista. Battle Packs 30 will include a cool two-pack of Dean Ambrose and Jake Roberts, recreating Jake “the Snake’s” DDT on Ambrose on Raw earlier this year. Also in the set are two-packs of Undertaker and Brock Lesnar, and R-Truth and the first figure of Xavier Woods.
Basic Series 42 will include one of the most anticipated toys in quite some time: the first action figure of El Torrito. Also in that series are Roman Reigns, Natalya, Big Show, Sin Cara, and Batista.
If you can’t find these figures in your local stores, most can be ordered (or pre-ordered) from ringsidecollectibles.com.
- WWE Exclusives: WWE Shop is selling a new plaque commemorating A.J. Lee’s 295-day run as Diva’s Champion. The plaque measures 29x16.5 inches with three color pictures and A.J.’s signature. WWE has made 295 of these with an asking price of $199.99.
WWE Shop has also re-stocked 8x10 autographs of Paige, Emma, Adrian Neville, and Sami Zayn, though the price has increased. When these were first offered for sale in March, WWE was asking $14.99 each; the price has since gone up to $19.99
WWE”s auction site is also back up and running (auction.wwe.com) with some cool new pieces such as a t-shirt worn by Bray Wyatt at Payback and the trunks Batista wore when he won the 2014 Royal Rumble. Also being sold are Rob Schamberger paintings that have been signed by Paul Heyman and Zeb Colter. Schamberger’s work has been featured in several PWTorch Collectibles Columns.
