In Brief: Seth Rollins’s lone certified autograph card has experienced a bump in sales over the last three months. Will his recent turn slow that momentum?

Card Show #29: 2013 Topps Best of WWE Autograph Seth Rollins

The rise in value of Roman Reigns’s 2013 Topps Best of WWE Autograph since his big showing at the Royal Rumble has been well documented in this column. But since the Shield’s babyface turn in the spring, Seth Rollins’s strong performance as the workhorse of the group has driven up the value of his autograph from that same set.

When Topps released its 2013 Best of WWE product last fall, signatures from all three Shield members were each selling in the $15-20 range. By the end of January, Reigns’s signature left those of Rollins and Dean Ambrose in the dust, jumping all the way to $100 before settling in the $75 range.

Since February, Rollins’s autograph has steadily increased in value. A couple dozen of Rollins’s autographs sold on eBay from March to May. Sales have been all over the place during that time, from $20 on March 6 to $59.99 on May 22. In March and April, the average eBay completed sale price of a Rollins 2013 Topps Best of WWE Autograph was $35.84 and $35.25, respectively. In April, the average sale price jumped to $42.50.

Heading into Payback, many fans were wondering if the Shield-Evolution elimination match would end with a heel turn by Reigns or Ambrose. Instead, WWE splintered The Shield by turning Rollins heel the following night on Raw and aligning him with Triple H and Randy Orton.

Will this heel turn stop what had been a steady increase in Rollins’s cards? It’s hard to say. Heel and face turns on their own don’t seem to influence card values. When C.M. Punk went from face to heel and back again from 2012 to 2013, collectors didn’t care. Punk was a star with a rabid following who wanted his signature. Even Randy Orton, who has been a background character for much of the year, is still one of the most popular wrestlers with collectors.

However, early reactions seem to indicate that fans weren’t ready for The Shield to break up; there was still a lot for them to do as a babyface trio. If there is a decline in the value of Rollins’s cards, it may be more of a backlash against WWE than against Rollins himself.

Seth Rollins is a star on the rise. Even if fans weren’t ready to see the end of The Shield, his alliance with Triple H could mean big things for the former Tyler Black. If Rollins’s turn is successful and turns him into a main event singles star, there is still certainly plenty of room for his 2013 Topps Best of WWE Autograph to increase in value.
