In Brief: Owen Hart appeared on surprisingly few WWF trading cards throughout his career.

Card Show #27: Owen Hart

Fifteen years after Owen Hart’s tragic death, wrestling fans and collectors regularly ask questions about the youngest of the Hart siblings.

“Will we ever see Owen in the WWE Hall of Fame?”

“Will Mattel ever be able to produce an action figure of Owen?”

“Will Owen be on this year’s WWE video game?”

Owen starred for the WWF during a time when business was down. Because of this, there isn’t a lot of Owen Hart merchandise out there for collectors. Owen had a few Jakks Pacific action figures that were pretty poorly made, and he appeared in just a handful of WWF trading card sets in the mid-1990s.

Owen’s first card – labeled by some collectors today as a rookie card – can be found in the 1992 WWF Merlin Gold Series Part 1 set released exclusively in Germany. “The Rocket Owen Hart of High Energy” is featured on card #37 in the set, with shaggy hair and colorful High Energy attire.

More and more wrestling collectors are diving into older card sets, especially those that feature the first licensed trading card of a major star like Owen. These cards don’t pop up often and when they do, they usually only sell for a couple bucks each. That could change with the way collectors are discovering older sets. Graded copies could fetch considerably more, but few have surfaced on sites like eBay or Amazon.

Owen’s most popular and valuable card is his Authentic Autograph from the 1998 Comic Images/DuoCards WWF Superstarz Set. The card shows Owen locking an opponent in the Sharpshooter and is signed in silver ink.

There are usually no more than two or three copies of this card offered for sale at any time on eBay, and usually at least one seller is asking a ridiculous amount. The secondary market value of the card is somewhat volatile because of its scarcity. Some cards will sell for as low as $75, others as high as $150. The most recent copy sold at auction for $105, and one is listed on eBay for $199.99.

As with any autograph, make sure the Owen you’re getting is authentic before forking over the money. The back of the card is a COA from Comic Images guaranteeing the authenticity of the signature.

Collectibles Column Notes

A column answering questions from PWTorch readers will be published this Friday. My apologies to readers who sent in questions hoping to see that column last week, but things got pushed back due to a family emergency.
