In Brief: Nearly 30 years after they were released, AWA stickers from 1985 are popular with collectors and tough to find.

Card Show #22: 1985 AWA Prism Stickers

If you were a child of the ‘80s, you probably spent a few quarters on the vending machines outside of Kmart or at the local roller skating rink. If so, you may remember stickers of top AWA wrestling stars like the Road Warriors, Sgt. Slaughter, Rick Martel, and “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin, among others.

Nearly 30 years later, some collectors feeling a bit nostalgic for those days have begun tracking down the 15 stickers from that set. While it isn’t an especially expensive quest, it is quite challenging. Finding those AWA stickers in 2014 isn’t very easy, even with the plethora of shopping and wrestling websites out there.

According to WrestlingTradingCards.com, the 1985 AWA Prism Stickers were manufactured by a company called WMMC. They were sold in vending machines for 25 cents each and featured color drawings of wrestlers on a prismatic foil background.

Many of the wrestlers, such as the Road Warriors, “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal, and Sgt. Slaughter, appear on multiple stickers. Others are pictured on only one sticker, including Baron Von Raschke, the Wild Samoans, and the Tonga Kid.

Most of the characters depicted on the stickers actually look like the wrestlers themselves, but there are some head scratchers. The sticker for the High Flyers features two jacked-up wrestlers who look nothing like Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell.

And the strangest sticker in the set is that of Larry Zbyszko, which shows a muscled up wrestler with long blond hair, looking something like Hulk Hogan without a moustache. In the background is a gigantic red devil with his arms outstretched. Huh?

The 1985 AWA Prism Stickers so rarely surface on eBay or other sites that it is tough to put a value on them. When they are offered for sale, they’re often listed with a Buy it Now of just a couple bucks each. There are a few collectors battling over these stickers when they do show up, which could lead to a bidding war over rare stickers like Magnum T.A.

If you have any of these stickers and want to share them with PWTorch readers, email PWTorch Collectibles Specialist Michael Moore at michaelmoorewriter@gmail.com . Follow him on Twitter @MMooreWriter .
