Ask the Specialists Roundtable #2

- Question from PWTorch VIP member Cody B. from Iowa: Do you think "Dolph Ziggler" is always going to be "damaged" (or restricted) because of his ridiculous ring name?

"KPCC Radio" (@MikeRoe) responds: Yes, I do think that Dolph Ziggler is going to be a little behind the ball based on his name. I also think he's good enough to overcome it if given the chance, and it seems like most of the audience has already accepted it. Still, it may not be the best mass appeal name, not the best for moving merchandise, etc. Of course, given the current course of his career, whether he'll be given that opportunity seems increasingly unlikely.

"Hits & Misses" Jon Mezzera responds: No. The fans were hugely behind him at this time last year despite his goofy name. WWE management seemed to be behind him too by giving him the World Title against Alberto Del Rio on the day after WrestleMania 29. It was a concussion that slowed him down, not his name.

After his recovery, he was not given a huge push, but I think that was more because of his inability (or unwillingness?) to adapt his character from being a heel to a babyface. In the last few months, WWE seems to be getting behind him again. I am a fan of Ziggler, but I don't really see him as a main event talent at this point. He can be a big star. He can and should be in the upper mid-card. But, I'm not convinced he should be a main event player and it has nothing to do with his name.

"Common Fan" Jimmy Eaton (@TheCommonFan) responds: Thanks for the question, Cody. While that name doesn't help him, what helps him less is how he's been presented. He's been booked horribly and hasn't made himself stand out as a face. Is that his fault or Creative? Probably both as I've not seen any growth from a guy who is supposedly a babyface. He's got way to many heel tendencies and the boat has long since sailed on a guy who was poised to break out last year.

Can he still catch the boat? Maybe. But it's going to take a lot more than his great ring work and ability to put guys over. His name? The least of his problems at this point, but I'm rooting for him. Love his work in the ring and still think potential is there.

"Instant Reaction" Ben Tucker (@BTuckerTorch) responds: If people are still lamenting over the fact that a guy named "The Undertaker" lost a match at WrestleMania, then, no, the name will do him no major harm.
