COLLECTIBLES COLUMN: Reader Q&A - Knowing the value of wrestling magazines if you're looking to sell

In Brief: If you’re a fan who would like to unload his old wrestling magazines, here are a few things to consider.

Several readers have inquired recently about selling wrestling magazines from the 1980s and ‘90s, a topic that has been covered in a previous PWTorch Collectibles Column. The questions are usually the same: Where should I sell them? How much should I ask? Should I sell them as a lot?

Before deciding to sell your old wrestling magazines on eBay, Craigslist or a wrestling-specific forum, here are some things to keep in mind.

Know what you have. Take a little time to look up the magazines in your collection. What might seem like junk to you might be worth a couple hundred dollars to someone else, and vice versa. As a general rule, special magazines such as certain WWF programs or Pro Wrestling Illustrated year-end issues or PWI 500 issues usually sell higher than regular magazines.

A few years ago, you might have gotten $10 for a 1993 WCW Yearbook. If you sold that particular magazine for $10, you’d probably be enraged to find out that the trading cards that were included in that magazine – specifically the first licensed card of Steve Austin – may have been worth several hundred dollars.

Decide how to sell your magazines. If you’ve got every WWF Magazine from 1986 to 2013, it would take a lot of time and effort to try to sell each issue individually. If you decided to package them together as a monstrous collection for one hefty sum, you might have a difficult time finding a super collector who wants every single copy.

Look at auctions on eBay, both active and completed. Find out how other sellers have been successful, and don’t be afraid to borrow their ideas. For instance, a complete 12-issue set of WWF Magazines from 1992 recently sold for $220; that’s nearly $20 an issue. By comparison, a lot of 60 from 1990 through 1995 only sold for $139.99 – barely more than $2 per issue.

Don’t underestimate shipping costs. Inexperienced sellers sometimes make the mistake of offering free shipping to attract more buyers. If you’re selling a single magazine, that’s a great idea. If, however, you’re selling a large collection of magazines, shipping costs could take a huge chunk out of your profits; you could even find yourself upside down and paying more money to ship the lot than you sold it for.

Also be aware that wrestling magazines cannot be shipped for the U.S. Postal Service’s Media Mail rate. The rules and restrictions as USPS.com clearly state “the material sent must be educational media. It can’t contain advertising, video games, computer drives, or digital drives of any kind.” Good luck finding a wrestling magazine that doesn’t contain some sort of advertising.

Know your market. Wrestling collectibles are huge with international fans. Many fans in the UK, Australia and other parts of the world can’t get the items they want. You’ll find a lot of international collectors who are willing to spend big money on wrestling items – unfortunately, that usually means big money on shipping costs as well.

Before listing your shipping costs on eBay, make sure you’ve accurately added them up using tools available from USPS.com and other shipping sites. Even if you’re only shipping a single magazine, you might be shocked how much it will cost to send it to a wrestling collector in Kuwait or Greece. Because of this, many sellers refuse to ship outside of North America.
