Instant Reaction - TNA Impact 10/4

Shocking. In the weeks leading up to Bound for Glory, TNA is actually taking steps backwards instead of forward. Tonight's show wasn't very interesting to begin with. Add in hokey Aces & Eights drama and TNA failing to hype Bound for Glory, and you have a flop of a show. Whereas WWE makes WrestleMania every year feel like a can't-miss show (at least to a certain extent), TNA seems to be treating BFG like a regular pay-per-view. TNA even hyped the Slammiversary lineage more than BFG. The announcers seem to be trying, but the most that TNA is does is throw out a random video package every now and then. TNA had a chance to make the show feel special tonight, but all they did was make matters worse.

Let's take the World Title match hype as an example. Austin Aries is obviously working towards a full-fledged heel turn. And yet, TNA has barely started going down that route. The biggest show of the year, and the World Title feud is progressing at a snail's pace. Not only that, but they have Austin Aries and Jeff Hardy fighting against each other ten days before the show. Even though they hardly touched each other, doesn't it take away some of the match's mystique? TNA has done nothing to sell me on this title match.

The best segment by far tonight came at the end, with Bully Ray cutting one of the best promos of his career with Sting and Hulk Hogan. And yet even then, the storyline he's getting into doesn't feel major league. Aces & Eights has officially jumped the shark, dunking Joseph Parks in tubs of water before electrocuting him. The heels of the semi-main event match at Bound for Glory are closer to movie villains than actual people.

The Roode-Storm feud was showing signs of life, but hit a snag this week when all eyes were on King Mo. Roode-Storm doesn't need any outside help to sell their feud, but instead of having an intense stare down, Roode lost all of his heat for no reason. This is a feud that they've been promoting off and on for almost a year, and yet it doesn't feel special. That's an issue. Then, there's the Tag Title match hype, which includes face wrestlers cheating in matches so their guy will win (a blatant heel tactic) and the team of Styles and Angle showing dissension when they've barely even teamed up. Joe vs. RVD was at least a fine match, but does anyone know what happened to Magnus? Wasn't he feuding with Joe just a few weeks ago before disappearing from TV?

The Knockouts match was fine and did a solid job setting up the KO Title match in 10 days, but the same can't be said for the Snow-Ryan segment. First of all, what is Joey Ryan's gimmick? After all of this time, he still hasn't advanced his promos and mannerisms. Even excluding that, TNA has hardly introduced him to the audience. What does he stand for? What are his motives? And why, oh why, is he afraid of the leader of the J.O.B. Squad? Just because Snow was part of the Attitude Era doesn't mean he's one of the best of all time.

Tonight was a mixture of bad ideas and bad execution, with little successful hype for Bound for Glory. Despite TNA's efforts, they have done an incredibly bad job hyping BFG, and tonight was the biggest offender. Bully Ray hit a home run in the final segment, but that's about all this show has to offer.
