PARKS BLOG: A Mind-Boggling, Legendary Loss for Jay Lethal on Impact

There isn't much in wrestling that frustrates me nearly to the point of anger. Triple H getting help from Kendrick and London, then taking them out for no reason. Samoa Joe's heel turn to help Kurt Angle. Shane McMahon fighting off all three members of Legacy, single-handedly. And that's about it. But one more was added to the list this past Thursday.

When I heard about Jay Lethal challenging legends to a match each week on Impact, I thought that could be cool. They could have him beat the legends every week until Hogan comes in, then you could have him challenge Hogan (as Black Machismo), since he beat all of Hulk's contemporaries. But what developed during the first week of this angle was straight-up mind-boggling.

The first legend he took on was Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart. An incredibly out-of-shape Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart. Not completely his fault, but I would've expected TNA to find someone in halfway decent shape. Then, I watched the match develop and Neidhart ended up beating Lethal. Cleanly. And by the way, the fans in the Impact Zone lost whatever sliver of credibility they had left when they chanted "You Still Got It!" to the nearly immobile Neidhart after a hip-toss. I half-thought they were doing it ironically. The match also only lasted two minutes, making Lethal look like a joke that not only could a guy in Anvil's shape beat him, but that it would only take two minutes.

The worst part was, there was no follow-up. Lethal didn't get an interview to save face, nothing. He simply lost cleanly, and that was that. I couldn't believe they didn't do anything to try to re-legitimize Lethal in the last hour or so of the show, perhaps to explain the loss or set the stage for something the following week.

I try to give angles the benefit of the doubt, and often preach, "let's see how they follow it up the next week, or in the future, before completely ripping it apart." But to me, I don't know what they could do this week to make up for what happened to Lethal. I have no reasonable explanation for why they would bring in Neidhart, presumably on a one-shot deal, completely out-of-shape, and beat one of the more young, exciting guys in the company. I just don't get it.
