MAIN EVENT PREDICTION - Reaction to John Cena's Return
Last week I wrote about Cena returning. In response to the article James Caldwell posted two days ago, I want to address the reaction that Cena will receive and how he may be presented to the public.
So to quickly summarize, short of video packages, Cena has not been seen since August. Instead of give him backstage or interview time, they are shielding him from the public to make for a grandiose pop when he makes his introduction for the title match at Survivor Series tonight.
The fact that Cena is in his hometown is interesting, but as Caldwell stated, that has not stopped the boos before; I have seen it first hand. Sure there will be an abundance of "Welcome Home Cena" signs in the crowd tonight, but there will also be quite a number of "Cena Sucks" ones.
If I had to guess, I would surmise that initially Cena will receive a strong reaction for his return. Slowly throughout the match the cheers will not be quite as loud as the boos, culminating when Cena goes for his "you can't see me" routine.
It won't be quite like how it would be if Cena happened to be returning in New York or Detroit, but just because we're in Beantown doesn't mean Cena will be graced with the same "hometown welcome" that Shawn Michaels gets in San Antonio or Edge gets in Toronto.
MID-CARD PREDICTION - Women's Division
I don't think I am alone in thinking that not too much has been happening in either the Raw or the Smackdown women's divisions as of late. In last week's column, I wrote that I was hoping for a women's Survivor Series style match, and low and behold, we have one.
To be quite honest, I am pretty excited to see this match. I think this thing could go either one of two ways: either they lose confidence in the women in this match and the introduction goes longer than the match itself; or they give them ample time to develop a story and begin to build some feuds within the women's division that is really hurting for something other than the played out Mickie James versus Beth Phoenix run.
On the Raw side, with both Candice and Mickie already having their shot at Beth and with Jillian being a heel, a feud with Kelly Kelly seems the most logical to come from this match. Kelly has scored a few fluke wins against the Glamazon, so that might be a feud worth delving into. Although if rumors are true and Kelly is the next Diva Playboy-bound, I hope this feud does not carry us all the way to WrestleMania - it's not that intriguing.
On the Smackdown side, any one of the four participants could be a suitable opponent to Michelle McCool's title. Sure we have already seen Natalya and Maryse in short runs, but there is a case that either of them could step back up again. Victoria is a great character with the mix of comedy and power that she brings to the fold. And the dynamic between Michelle and Maria as of late has had its moments and in all likelihood, we very well could see one of them turn heel in the near future.
And then there is any sort of combination of feuds if they wanted to ignore the roster split. Who wouldn't want to see the Women's Champion versus the Diva's Champion? Maybe one day we'll see some sort of unification match, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for one.
FINGERS CROSSED PREDICTION - the WWE Title Match and Edge's Return
John Cena isn't the only one returning at Survivor Series! I really have a hunch that Edge will do what he did last year at the Survivor Series: return during a title match.
I am absolutely astounded that so many people are predicting Hardy to get the big win tonight. Personally, I don't think he has a flame's chance in a windstorm of becoming champion tonight. I do think his time is not far away, but it isn't tonight.
I see it playing out as Edge interfering which leads to Hardy getting pinned. At next months pay-per-view we will be treated to Edge versus Jeff Hardy and Kozlov finally getting Triple H one-on-one.
EDIT: Since writing this prediction, wwe.com has posted that Hardy was found unconscious in his hotel this morning. There are also reports that Edge was seen in Boston. So I guess if Edge shows up tonight it won't be much of a shock. As far as the Hardy situation is concerned, I believe this to be a work. If it was real, I think that WWE would not have posted it so soon without much information. But be this as it may, I think there is no way he will be at the arena tonight. So instead of Edge interfering tonight, I think he will be revealed as the one who pushed Hardy, thus setting up their eventual feud.
PLEASE NOT THAT PREDICTION - Don't Bury Rhino!
I don't always have the best things to say about TNA, but one thing that was spot on this week was Rhino's promo and role. Like Christian, Rhino is not as established as the other members of the MEM, but he was not born in TNA and he is a former world champion. If I was Rhino, you better believe I would be frustrated with the oversight.
Rhino has never been one of my favorite wrestlers, but I do think he can be pretty darn good given the right circumstances. When he is thrust into the limelight, he really can shine. This edition of Impact was a prime example.
But with all that positive, typical of TNA, they screwed it up in the end. They gave Rhino a match with Angle, which was also positive, but then they gave away the outcome just after announcing the match. Who really thinks Angle's contract will end? After building on another Jarrett versus Angle match, who does not think it is going to happen? I mean, with those stipulations we already know that Angle is going to win the match. If I was excited to see a pissed off Rhino take on the MEM's biggest mouthpiece, I'm certainly not anymore because I know what the outcome of the match is going to be.
After it's all said and done, I just hope they don't bury Rhino again. He was impressive in his rejuvenation this week and he would be a good combatant against the stacked MEM, so please don't push him back under the carpet after he loses to Angle at the next pay-per-view.
