WWE Vintage Collection TV Report
June 14, 2009
Aired in the U.K. on Sky Sports
Report by Cody Endres, PWTorch contributor
WWE's Vintage Collection show airs in the U.K. and is hosted by Mean Gene Okerlund. They show a varied assortment of older matches every week, similar to WWE's "Classics On Demand" pay subscription service.
-We open the show with a screen that says "The following is an important message from World Wrestling Entertainment." We are then shown a video with voiceovers by Cena, Jericho, Mysterio, Batista, and others talking about how much they've trained and injuries they've suffered from. The video ended with the phrase "Please, Don't Try This."
-Mean Gene Okerlund explains that the team of crack producers search the vault each week for some of the most memorable and sometimes not so memorable moments from WWE's past. This week features a flashback to the Brother Love show and a steel cage match between Ted DiBiase and Randy Savage.
1 – JACQUES ROUGEAU (w/Jimmy Hart) vs. BRUTUS BEEFCAKE
This match is from a December 6, 1988 episode of Superstars and is joined in progress. Rougeau connects with a back elbow. The future Mountie follows up with an ugly looking backdrop. On the outside, Hart wallops Beefcake with his megaphone out of sight of the referee. Rougeau works over the back of Beefcake. Beefcake turns the tide with an atomic drop. Rougeau has his head rammed into the turnbuckle 10 times while the fans count along. Beefcake attempts a running splash, but Rougeau lifts his knees up. With Hart on the apron trying to cause a distraction, Rougeau accidentally runs into his own manager. Beefcake locks in the sleeper hold, but Raymond Rougeau runs out prompting the DQ. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers put the boots to Beefcake. Beefcake manages to grab his shears out of the corner and scares them both off.
WINNER: Brutus Beefcake by DQ in 5:50 of what aired. Mediocre.

-Okerlund talked about The Brain Busters which comprised of Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard. The pair were former members of the Four Horsemen, but managed to capture the WWE Tag Team Titles without any backup in 1989.
2 – THE BRAIN BUSTERS (Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard) vs. THE YOUNG STALLIONS (Jim Powers & Paul Roma)
This match is from November 12, 1988. Roma went crazy on the Busters hitting them with dropkicks and scoop slams. The Young Stallions work over Blanchard's leg for a short period. Anderson interferes and manages to tag in. Anderson hits his trademark spinebuster on Roma for a nearfall. With Powers complaining to the referee, The Brain Busters double team Roma on the floor.

The Brain Busters continue to isolate Roma. On commentary, Gorilla Monsoon plugged WWE merchandise for the upcoming holiday season. He said you could get something for your girlfriend, your girlfriend's girlfriend, or your dad. What? Monsoon and Sean Mooney talked about the Elizabeth posters now on sale. Monsoon mentioned that hanging up that poster might get you in trouble with the Macho Man. Roma suplexes Blanchard and finally makes the tag. Powers dominates both Brain Busters. With Blanchard in the midst of attempting to execute a sunset flip, Anderson clotheslines Roma over to cause the pinfall.
WINNERS: The Brain Busters in 10:04 of what aired. This wasn't exactly The Brain Busters vs. The Rockers, but it there was some good action.

-Okerlund talked about the assortment of shows hosted by superstars including Piper's Pit, The Barber Shop, The Peep Show, and the VIP Lounge. He talked about the Brother Love show, hosted by the white-suited and red-faced Brother Love (Bruce Prichard).
-They showed The Brother Love show from the November 26, 1988 episode of Saturday Night's Main Event. Slick was in the ring with Brother Love while Hulk Hogan made his entrance. Love asked Hogan how it felt to be attacked by Big Bossman with a billy club. Love ripped the mic away before Hogan could answer. Slick said Hogan looked like a criminal with his beady eyes. Love asked Hogan what was going through his mind when Bossman was beating him within an inch of his life. Love ripped the mic away from Hogan again to answer his own question. Slick said the Bossman beat Hogan until he was black and blue. Hogan finally stole the mic away and said Love was as phony as those rings on his fingers. Hogan grabbed Slick and flung him over the top rope. Hogan slammed Love and ripped off his own shirt. Jesse Ventura called it disgusting. Hogan handcuffed Love to the top rope and gave him a running clothesline to the floor. Talk about airing a random segment.

-The regular "Please Do Not Try This at Home" video aired
-Okerlund talked about the Divas today being smart, sexy, and powerful. He explained none of the Diva's success today would be possible without the likes of Sensational Sherri and Rockin' Robin.
3 – SHERRI MARTEL vs. ROCKIN' ROBIN – WWE Women's Championship
This match is from an October 7, 1988 show in Paris, France. Sherri kept knocking Robin off the apron so she couldn't get back into the ring. Bobby Heenan said he wagered some McNuggets on the outcome of the match. Sherri climbed to the top rope. Robin slammed her off. Robin places Sherri in the corner and chops her repeatedly. Robin goes for a cover, but Sherri puts a foot on the ropes. Sherri connects with a Russian legsweep for a nearfall. Robin surprises Sherri with a flying bulldog to get the pin.
WINNER: Rockin' Robin in 4:00 of what aired to capture the WWE Women's Championship. Quick and painless.

-Okerlund said that two men that made huge names for themselves in the 1980's were Randy Savage and Ted DiBiase. These two superstars were bigger than life and strived to be the best.
4 – RANDY SAVAGE (w/Elizabeth) vs. TED DIBIASE (w/Virgil) – Steel Cage Match for the WWE Championship
This match is from the June 25, 1988 show at Madison Square Garden. DiBiase jumps Savage from behind to start the match. DiBiase starts to climb the cage, but Savage stops him and rams his head into the turnbuckle. DiBiase regains control and connects with his patented fist drop. DiBiase tries climbing again, but Savage pulls him down.

-A video aired hyping The Bash PPV
Moving ahead in the action, both men knock each other down with a double clothesline. Savage attempts to crawl out the door, but DiBiase grabs his ankle. DiBiase rams Savage's head into the mat. Both men knock each other down with another double clothesline. Savage tries climbing the cage. Virgil interferes to stop him. Savage suplexes DiBiase. Savage hits DiBiase with an atomic drop and DiBiase does a jumping bump into the side of the cage. Savage crawls towards the door, but Virgil swings the door into his face. DiBiase climbs halfway out of the door. Savage catches him at the last second and tugs him back into the cage. Both men are on their knees punching each other. Savage throws DiBiase into the cage and DiBiase does a crazy backwards head over heels bump. Savage, DiBiase, and Virgil are all battling on top of the cage. Some crazy fan jumps the rail and climbs up the side of the cage. The fan gets a few light shots in on Virgil before he's yanked down. Savage gives both men a double noggin knocker sending Virgil to the floor and DiBiase back into the ring. Savage climbs down the cage to secure the victory.
WINNER: Randy Savage in 9:06 of what aired to retain the WWE Championship. Superb match.
-Back in the studio Okerlund said Virgil found a way to get involved, only to cost DiBiase his shot at the championship. Okerlund said both Savage and DiBiase would continue to have historic battles throughout their careers.
