TNA News: Inside the Impact quarter-hour ratings - 33 percent Q1 drop from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4

TNA Impact from last Thursday (February 4) opened with a show-low 1.02 quarter-hour rating, which was down an astounding 32.5 percent compared to the first quarter-hour on January 28.

After TNA created the Montreal Screwjob angle at the end of the Jan. 21 episode, the Jan. 28 episode opened with a 1.51 quarter-hour rating as interested viewers tuned in for the follow-up.

Two weeks after the angle, Impact was down to a 1.02 to open the Feb. 4 show with Brutus Magnus coming to the ring at the top of the show. Mr. Anderson then came out to face Magnus in a #1 contender tournament qualifying match.

After the 1.02 opening, the show increased to a 1.16 quarter-hour rating for the Mick Foley vs. Eric Bischoff mid-ring verbal confrontation. The 1.16 rating was still below the 1.18 overall show average, though.

-- Impact actually peaked with a 1.26 rating in the eighth and final quarter-hour of the show, which is a reversal of the late 2009 trend where the least-watched segment of the show was typically the final 15 minutes of the show.

The key to the eighth quarter-hour, though, was TNA including the Angelina Love vs. Tara match in the final 15 minutes of the show before the Kevin Nash vs. Mick Foley match. One consistency nearly every week over the past two years on Impact has been the Beautiful People (and Angelina Love) as a ratings draw.

-- One other major factor to look at is the A.J. Styles vs. Samoa Joe TNA PPV build-up with Ric Flair and The Pope as involved parties.

The fourth quarter-hour delivered a weak 1.13 rating with a Samoa Joe vs. Jesse Neal match and the first-half of Styles vs. Pope. However, the quarter-hour also had two commercial breaks.

The fifth quarter-hour then increased to a 1.23 rating with the conclusion of Styles vs. Pope and Samoa Joe's run-in to go after Styles and Flair to set up the PPV title match.

It's also worth noting there was an Angelina Love backstage interview near the end of the fifth quarter-hour that could have contributed to the increase.
