WWE News: Linda McMahon responds to whether TNA is direct competition to the company's business Nov 6, 2008 - 1:30:19 PM
During this afternoon's conference call with investors, WWE CEO Linda McMahon was asked whether the company believes TNA is a direct competitor in the marketplace.
McMahon repeated the WWE line that they are competing against entertainment companies, not necessarily in the wrestling market.
"TNA, while in this particular genre is not our necessary competition," McMahon said. "It's part of it for part of the entertainment marketplace, but (we're) not targeted toward one particular scope of entertainment. We are constantly in the marketplace competing for this entertainment dollars."
Caldwell's Analysis: It's easy to look at WWE as being snobs about direct wrestling competition, as the company doesn't believe they are in the wrestling business, but in the entertainment business. However, WWE has been consistent with this approach of stating they are going after potential NBA fans, NASCAR fans, and movie-goers for entertainment dollars.
Pro wrestling is merely a segment of the entertainment industry, and WWE wants to compete against the industry, not the segment.
