WWE/ROH News: Bryan Danielson interviewed on final ROH weekend and joining WWE Sep 23, 2009 - 11:35:33 AM
Ring of Honor wrestler Bryan Danielson says he's "sad" leaving the independent wrestling scene after this weekend's shows in Boston and New York to conclude his ROH career. At the same time, Danielson said he's optimistic about his chances to succeed in WWE.
"I'm sad because I love what I do now. I love independent wrestling. I love the guys I wrestle with," Danielson told the student newspaper at Boston U. to promote Friday's ROH show in Boston. "You become like a family on the road. I'm going to miss the intimate atmosphere. But, I'm excited for new opportunities."
Danielson says he's walking into WWE knowing he will be giving up his freedom as a performer, but he's taking the approach that WWE markets more than just what happens inside the wrestling ring.
Danielson is considered one of the top pro wrestlers in the industry, which has set high expectations for his in-ring work. He's essentially lowering fan expectations for when he debuts in WWE and isn't automatically given the chance to have a five-star match on national TV.
"WWE is an entertainment company, they produce not only wrestling but they produce movies, they put out CDs and books ... some of it has to do with wrestling but a lot of it has to do with advertising," he said. "At ROH, the focus is on the drama inside the ring, whereas the drama in WWE is outside the ring."
The Daily Free Press at Boston University had a detailed profile on Ring of Honor to promote Friday's show on campus. ROH president Cary Silkin, ROH on HDNet writer Dave Lagana, and Colt Cabana were also interviewed in addition to Danielson.
The focus was on ROH being an "indie rock" group that fans get a chance to be a part of before they or the wrestlers hit the big-time.
Colt Cabana was positioned as the wrestler who already went to the big-time ahead of Danielson and returned to ROH thrilled to be back. Cabana believes he wasn't given a fair opportunity to succeed in WWE.
"I was ecstatic to come back to ROH because I wasn't allowed to be me and given a fair shot at WWE," he said. "In ROH, I'm 100 percent, there is no glass ceiling. The fans love me for me. I'm allowed to wrestle and entertain to my full potential. As a creative person, it's a great outlet."
