House of Hardcore's Tommy Dreamer fancies himself a promoter and a wrestler. Or, as he put it during an interview with TSN's "Off The Record," a player-coach like in the old baseball days.

Dreamer wears both hats for Saturday's HOH show in Toronto, where Dreamer is running the show while also scheduled to face Chris Hero in a featured singles bout.

"He's an excellent striker with his elbows and his kicks, I've wrestled him one other time and I was bruised and lumped up and I like that aggressive style," Dreamer said of Hero. "At 44-years-old, I like someone that's going to bring more out of me. "

Dreamer noted he's had to adjust his in-ring style to continue wrestling and make a living in pro wrestling when he's not promoting HOH.

"I used to think I was invincible and still in my mind when I'm preforming I'm 28-years-old, but my body says, 'No, you're 44, idiot.' You're wrestling a 25-minute match and you're jumping seven feet in the air and a guy is spiking you to the ground. I made that move famous and I've taken it a million times and for the first time I felt pain and I said no I don't want to be in a wheelchair and no I don't want to mess myself up any further," Dreamer said.

Dreamer had a chance to put on both hats last Sunday in Houston for Lone Star Wrestling. Alberto El Patron was scheduled for the main event, but Alberto no-showed. So, Dreamer took a leadership role saying he would send the crowd home happy.

The card was adjusted for Dreamer to main-event against Lance Hoyt. There was little wrestling, a lot of fighting in the crowd, and one big high spot with Dreamer putting Hoyt through a table with a Death Valley Driver for the finish. The crowd ate it up and indeed went home happy.

In the TSN interview, Dreamer credited his work ethic and promotional skills to his upbringing in ECW, where "hardcore" was not just stunt matches and violence, but giving everything he had on a given night.

"I think hardcore has been pushed to market the violence, the blood, the tables, and all that stuff because that's what they thought ECW was," said Dreamer of the ECW stereotype. "Hardcore is about passion and a work ethic, going out there and pushing your body to the limits to entertain the fans."

Dreamer said he's carried that mentality to how he books his shows, trying to line up dream matches that draw in the niche wrestling fan who wants to see The Dudleys vs. The Young Bucks.

"I have straight up asked the fans who or what they would like to see and it gives fans that interaction with the superstars," Dreamer said. "(Fans) get to see Team 3D who can still go in the ring vs. the Young Bucks, which is a tag team dream match. I love that stuff, I'm a fan."

Bully Ray of the Dudleys team recently returned to TNA TV, but the duo wants another run in WWE working with the up-and-coming tag teams. For now, they'll take a buzz-worthy tag match with the Young Bucks.

“I’m a big fan of the Young Bucks, because I am a fan of anybody who stays true to themselves and gets over in a way that they can still look themselves in the mirror and in a way the fans still appreciate what they’re doing,” Bully told Justin Barrasso for Sports Illustrated in an in-depth interview with Brother Devon.

“But don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to pick the Bucks up and superbomb them through a table. I eat superkicks for breakfast. We’re definitely going to lay an a-- kicking on them.”

The Dudleys would also like to have matches with Erick Rowan & Luke Harper on WWE TV, who started using the 3D to set up a potential program. But, Rowan was recently injured, putting the idea on hold. Bully and Devon say they're not sure WWE even wants to bring them in, though.

“For us not to be back there, knowing that we’re in the best shape we’ve ever been in, I don’t understand it. We’re better now than we were ten or fifteen years ago," said Devon.

"I understand that they want the future. But without the older generation that paved the way for these young guys to come, you’re not going to have it. Wrestling is a lost art, so you need the older guys like us to help show the younger guys how it’s done. I don’t understand it, though I know it needs to be on their terms."
