Interview with Beyond's Denver Colorado

(1) What was going through your head when you were told your show at Fete Music was cancelled in September because the venue was shut down due to a shooting outside the venue the night before?

On my way to Fete Music I received a text message from one of the wrestlers which contained a link to an article from a local news site which didn't really get into too much detail about what had happened the night before. I called my contact at Fete Music to ask if we were still on and they had no clue what I was talking about. When I showed up the venue I saw a marked city car pull up and a police officer and city representative followed me into the building. Now keep in mind we already had fans waiting outside and the ring was set up in the ballroom. This was *maybe* an hour-and-half before doors were supposed to open. I'll give the staff at Fete credit - they stopped everything they were doing, including dealing with city officials, to try and line up another building for us on short notice.

When I realized we weren't going to be able to pull it together I freaked out. It's one thing if we set ourselves up to fail through poor planning but with was an instance where we had legitimately no control. Having to explain the situation to the wrestlers and fans was one of the toughest challenges I've ever encountered. My mind immediately switched from how we could turn this negative into a positive and since we had a ton of concession prepared to sell at our scheduled event we decided to give it away for free and hold a meet and greet in the parking lot. We had some fans that had traveled as far as Northern Maine to support the best wrestling that they have access to and ultimately on that day we couldn't deliver. A pulled pork sandwich can't exactly make up for that.

(2) Did you think Beyond Wrestling was done running live shows at that point due to the possibility of Fete Music not being allowed to re-open and losing out on the gate for the show that was cancelled?

Oh, definitely, I thought we were done for good. But, then I started talking to the guys and talking to the fans and talking to the staff at Fete Music. I had everyone's unanimous support. You know, our budget for that show was somewhere in the range of $10,000. Half of that was booking fees which every single wrestler forfeited without hesitation. We're talking guys who flew across the country or that drove 20 hours to be there. I would have NEVER expected that type of camaraderie, especially from some of the guys that had never even compete for Beyond Wrestling before! We did about $3,000 in pre-sale tickets, and believe it or not only about half the fans asked for refunds.

Where we really took a hit were expenses that couldn't be recuperated including ring rental, flights, hotels rooms, food, promotional materials, etc. I'm not sure if our fans realize but every single dollar spent is put right back into growing Beyond Wrestling. Any show that is a failure has the potential to be our last. It's one of the reasons we've become one of the fastest growing promotions in the world. We are constantly reinvesting in our organization to secure our future. Because of the selflessness of the fans and wrestlers we were able to bounce back pretty quickly, all things considered.

(3) What was your reaction when you found out Fete Music was going to re-open and how soon did you know you were going to be able to run shows again?

I knew right away. I went to the hearing at city hall to get all of the details first hand. I was thrilled. It was a relief. I don't really have much interest hosting our live events anywhere else. Fete Music made Beyond Wrestling. We weren't really gaining much traction running in the Knight Of Columbus in Bridgewater, Mass. The presentation suffered. Our first-ever live event was in conjunction with Inter Species Wrestling at their venue in Danbury, Conn. It was a standing room only night club which really boosted the energy in the room. Fete Music allows us to do that on a bigger scale.

I'm not sure people truly understand how much work goes into executing live events and Fete Music makes my job easier. They take care of the lighting, the sound, the security, the people working the door, the bartenders, and help out with promotions which gives me a little breathing room day of show so I can focus on fine-tuning our live events. If Fete Music didn't re-open we would have probably stopped running live events altogether and reverted back to our studio taping format.

(4) You’re running four shows next weekend with two at Fete Music (Alive & Kicking and Tournament for Tomorrow 3). In addition to that you’re running TFT 3:16 in the afternoon before both shows at the RWA Chop Shop. Obviously that’s a lot of wrestling for a fan to take in during one weekend, so what can people expect out of these shows with Tournament For Tomorrow 3 being a tag tournament this year and in addition to that you have the TFT 3:16, which is another tag tournament?

The driving concept between "Tournament For Tomorrow" is putting a spotlight on the future. This year, because of the setbacks we've faced since canceling "Makin' Moves" in September, we need to not only look out for the future of tag team wrestling, but also the future of Beyond Wrestling. The "Tournament For Tomorrow 3" which will take place on November 30 at Fete Music will take four of the top tag teams on the scene and put them against four of the most established tag teams in Beyond Wrestling. Our goal is to put together the strongest possible lineup make our return weekend a resounding success.

The "TFT 3:16" tournament will be released for free in its entirety on YouTube and will highlight some of the best up-and-coming tag teams in the country. The further you get in the tournament, the more exposure you are guaranteed. A strong performance can launch careers. Competitors like A.C.H., Drew Gulak, J.T. Dunn, and Kimber Lee were made men (and women) thanks to previous year's tournaments. We're in a tough spot because we exist to provide underrated and overlooked wrestlers a platform to prove themselves but those guys don't always have the strongest followings to start. This weekend has it all - the best tag teams in the world, the guys that paved the way, and the guys that will be pushing wrestling forward for years to come. With #TFT3 weekend we are going to have our cake and eat it, too.

(5) One of the biggest matches of the weekend is the West Coast (Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson) & Best Friends (Trent? & Chuck Taylor) & Brian Cage vs. East Coast (Juicy Product (J.T. Dunn & David Starr) & Doom Patrol (Chris Dickinson & Jaka) & Dan Barry 10 Man Tag match at “Alive and Kicking.” How did you come up with the idea for that match and what can fans expect from it?

Well, I just found out that Trent? needs more time off to get his knee back to 100 percent. He really trained hard to be back in time for WWNLive's tour of China. The top guys in the indies are professional athletes. They earn money with their bodies. They routinely push themselves past their physical limitations. I know that it's eating away at Trent? that he's back on the sideline. He's one of the most straight up dudes I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He loves what he does and I think the fans can recognize that and that's one of the reasons why he is so beloved. I can't wait to work with him again in the future when the time is right.

Trent's absence is going to drastically change the dynamic of this contest. You had five competitors who really made a name for themselves on the West Coast going up against five of the most well-traveled competitors that broke out thanks to their contributions to Beyond Wrestling here on the East Coast. It'll be interested to see how things come together (or fall apart) over the next week as "Alive And Kicking" draws closer...

(6) Da Hoodz (Davey Cash & Kris Pyro) have been part of some epic multi-team tag matches since the company started and this weekend they are finally getting an opportunity to step up and face some great tag teams in Tournament For Tomorrow 3 on Nov. 30. They cut a promo at “Americanrana 14” asking for Tournament for Tomorrow to be a tag team tournament this year. Why is now the right time for them to get a big opportunity against The Young Bucks in the first round of TFT3 and possibly advancing to face a number of other really good tag teams?

Da Hoodz are the epitome of the Beyond Wrestling success story. It took them a long time to get a spot at one of our studio tapings but they busted ass and really won over some of the more prominent and tenured wrestlers on our roster. More importantly, they kept coming back. They worked hard, they stepped up to every challenge, and they gradually worked their way into a more prominent role. Our first live event at Fete Music - "Americanrana" - featured some of the biggest names in independent wrestling, but Team TREMENDOUS vs. M1nute Men vs. EYFBO vs. Da Hoodz was the match everyone was talking about.

Even though the tag teams were put through the ringer with some pretty strange match concepts throughout 2013 and 2014 one thing was always a constant and that was the effort of Da Hoodz. When the fans take notice it is impossible not to reward that type of hard work. The Young Bucks are the best tag team in the world so if Da Hoodz can even hang with them it's going to raise their profile. If they can knock off The Young Bucks and advance to the second round of "Tournament For Tomorrow 3" they will put the entire wrestling world on notice. Let me put it like this - we don't set up our guys to fail.

(7) Are there any sleeper matches on any of the cards that you think will surprise fans? I know I have my eyes on Biff Busick vs. Mike Bailey on the “Alive and Kicking” card.

It's taken us a long time to finally get Mike Bailey to take the trip to Rhode Island so you know he's going to make the most of that opportunity. Green Ant, now Silver Ant, was an obvious standout of the Wrestling Is promotions. He's a wrestler's wrestler. The series of matches between Biff Busick and Eddie Edwards put Beyond Wrestling on the map. Biff Busick is now the most popular wrestler in Beyond Wrestling and has competed for every major organization in the United States in the last year. You don't think Silver Ant is going to do everything in his power to show that he's just as good?

I'm also really looking forward to Jay Freddie vs. Brian Fury. They've made everyone competing on the secret shows who is looking to break out step up their game by trading victories at the RWA Chop Shop over the summer. At the conclusion of their second contest the fans demanded that they settle the score at Fete Music. After watching the first two matches which are available for free at http://www.youtube.com/beyondwrestling . How can you say no to that?

(8) I know you want to sell out Fete Music for “Alive and Kicking” and “Tournament For Tomorrow 3.” I think Fete Music is a great venue for wrestling and the Beyond Wrestling fans are great, but what do you have to say to people that are near Providence, R.I. that are on the fence about attending these shows?

Support local wrestling! Selfishly, I want Beyond Wrestling to succeed because I want to present the type of wrestling I like to fans within driving distance of where I live. This isn't a knock on New England since there are plenty of promotions who are doing just fine in the area but the style that is prevalent out this way doesn't really do it for me. I want to see freak athletes pulling off breathtaking stunts and making it look easy. I want to see bad ass tough guys stretch and pulverize each other. At the end of the day I'm still a fan and I want to be entertained, too. The vibe at our shows is unlike anything else out there, and now that some of our guys are traveling the country wrestling at the top spots, they can report back to me to confirm as much.

The quality of the matches, the respect, and support of the fans, the energy at Fete Music, the homemade concessions and Championship Melt - it all comes together to create the most interactive pro wrestling on the planet. When I see "fans" complain about the length of our cards online it confirms that they have never seen Beyond Wrestling in person. It's like being at a party. There's plenty of awesome wrestling being presented every weekend around the country but if you live within driving distance to Providence, Rhode Island you're not going to find anything else that can compare.

(9) One thing people have been asking about is DVD releases. Smart Mark Video recently put out almost all of your shows that haven’t been released yet. Can we expect the shows to come out faster now that you teamed with SMV for those that prefer DVDs, VODs, and MP4 downloads?

Yes. TCTapes will film and edit the matches, Championship Graphics will handle cover and disc art, and it'll all get sent to Smart Mark Video to compile and distribute. It was stupid for us not to get this sorted out sooner and we won't make the same mistakes again going forward.

(10) Looking ahead, what are your plans for Beyond Wrestling in 2015 and what steps do you think you can take for the promotion to continue to grow?

It's going to depend how we do next weekend. The fan support is essential. I have follow up dates lined up with Fete Music through January. I want to put a renewed emphasis on studio tapings next year regardless of the direction of our live events. I love what Drew Gulak has been doing with Dojo Wars at the CZW Academy. I'd like to work closer with him on that project. Biff Busick has been training a dozen wrestlers since September and I think a few of his students are going to be ready to roll in the coming weeks. For a while fans were calling us the East Coast PWG, which is about the highest compliment we could be paid. PWG showcases the best independent wrestlers on the scene. I want to continue to help develop guys to get them at that level. We are forced to constantly reinvent ourselves because our roster is in a constant state of flux.

The live events at Fete Music are only part of what we do. We've also got the studio tapings, the secret shows, the collaborations with other promotions, and then when you throw in our YouTube Channel, Championship Melt, and Biff Busick's Wrestling Academy in the mix how can you not be excited for what we have in store? We've worked hard to get where we are. I still can't believe it was almost taken away from us in September. That was a wake up call. You know something like this isn't designed to last forever, but we're not going to call it quits until we are able to make significant, positive, lasting contributions to pro wrestling.
