"The Rock" Dwayne Johnson has been hustling for nearly a month promoting "Journey 2" and it paid off this weekend with a #3-ranked domestic box office finish, ahead of a "Star Wars" re-release in 3D, and a #1-ranked international box office draw.
"Journey 2" started the weekend as the #4 movie, trailing "Star Wars," but families "swamped theaters for 'Journey 2' on Saturday," according to the Associated Press.
For the weekend, "Journey 2" drew $27.6 million domestically, ahead of $23.0 million for "Star Wars," and Rock's family movie also drew $25.5 million internationally in 29 overseas markets, topping Star Wars's $20.5 million.
Through the first month "Journey 2" has been out internationally and now domestically, the movie has grossed $102.3 million. $74.7 million has been from international sources.
Journey's performance exceeded expectations domestically and studio executives were pleased with the weekend results. "For us to win that family battle this weekend was a tremendous coup for the film," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "Journey 2."
