Other News: "The Wrestler" called best movie of the year by far by "At the Movies" TV show host Dec 13, 2008 - 9:47:04 PM
Syndicated show "At the Movies" this weekend reviewed "The Wrestler" starring Mickie Rourke. The following is most of the dialogue between the two reviewers regarding the movie:
Ben Lyons: "The Wrestler was a surprise hit with audiences at Tornoto and will surprise you if you give it a chance. A brilliant performance that makes us believe in Mickie Rourke again. This is a film you've got to see. You won't be disappointed."
Ben Mankiewicz: "To put it simply, this is the best film I've seen this year. And I gotta tell ya', it's not even close. It's number one and it's solidly number one. Mickie Rourke is so good... This is a really impressive film."
Lyons: "I grew up watching WWF wrestling and idolizing these guys. And there's a very powerful documentary called 'Beyond the Mat' that showcases the Jake 'The Snake' Roberts and Terry Funk and these guys as they kind of fade into obscurity and deal with real life and Rourke really embodies these iconic figures. Every time you want to stand up and cheer for Rourke, Aronofsky reminds us that he's got issues and demons and problems and reasons we shouldn't admire this guy. It's just a rich film full of life."
Mankiewicz: "For an industry that is so big and grand, this story is told in such small ways to see a wrestler try to cling to his past by himself dragging his own suitcase through the cold in a parking lot."
Lyons finishes by saying the performance by Rourke lives up to all of the hype.
