Other News: CBS Sports details Bobby Lashley's timeline on when he considered leaving WWE Dec 12, 2008 - 5:16:46 PM
After a run in the main event spotlight on the ECW brand in 2007, Bobby Lashley was prepared to leave WWE for MMA. He waited about a year, including the WrestleMania 23 match involving Donald Trump before considering leaving the company.
"I talked with the management of the WWE about my interest in fighting about a year before leaving," Lashley told CBS Sports. "I had an injury and had to take some time off. So while I was rehabbing the injury I talked to them a little more and just came to the conclusion that if any time was a good time it was now. That's when I decided to take the leave and started training."
Lashley says he was influenced by Kurt Angle to pursue pro wrestling when he was coming out of amateur wrestling because it would be an opportunity to learn about the entertainment aspect of athletics.
"Just speaking to some of the people from the WWE like Kurt Angle and some others, I felt like I would want to make that jump into the WWE and see more of the entertainment side of the sport," Lashley said.
"Even while going through the WWE there were always moments where I wanted to train and wanted to fight, so when the time was right I decided to start fighting."
FYI: Lashley's MMA debut is Saturday night at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fla. Lashley will be fighting another MMA debuter, Josh Franklin, on the Mixed Fighting Alliance promotion's "There Will Be Blood" card.
