Other News: Former ECW champion Bobby Lashley says it wasn't only about the money in WWE Dec 11, 2008 - 11:07:14 AM
Former ECW champion Bobby Lashley says he didn't join WWE straight out of amateur wrestling in college simply for the money. Although it was a "means to an end" of providing for his family, he says he also enjoyed performing in front of WWE fans.
"It wasn't only about the money in the WWE, I enjoyed the crowds," Lashley told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "I was in WrestleMania representing Donald Trump in front of 85,000 people. It was crazy."
The WrestleMania 23 attendance is a bit exaggerated, but Lashley is not kidding about his MMA training for his debut fight this weekend. Lashley will be in Miami on Saturday night wanting to prove that he's not a fake fighter trying to do MMA.
"I know what people are saying. I think I lost some of my credibility as a fighter, wrestler, and competitor being in the WWE," Lashley said. "I know I have a lot to lose."
Lashley also adds some background on his decision to move from amateur wrestling to WWE. Apparently he was injured when a bullet struck him during a bank robbery, ending his amateur career, leading him to pro wrestling.
"WWE signed me right away and it kept me in great shape for mixed martial arts, which was always in the back of my mind," Lashley said. "I knew I would always have an opportunity to come back and compete someday, even though people discredit what I did before the WWE."
FYI: Lashley's MMA debut is Saturday night at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fla. Lashley will be fighting another MMA debuter, Josh Franklin, on the Mixed Fighting Alliance promotion's "There Will Be Blood" card.
