NWA News: NWA to begin taping shows in Hollywood for syndicated and potentially cable TV distribution Oct 31, 2008 - 11:08:05 AM
The National Wrestling Alliance will begin taping wrestling shows again November 14-16 with plans to produce and sell their TV content on worldwide syndication and potentially cable TV outlets. Big Vision Entertainment is signing on as the production and distribution company to push the new "NWA Championship Wrestling from Hollywood" shows.
TV tapings will take place at the Columbia Square Studios in Hollywood, Calif., with free admission to fans on a first-come, first-serve basis. Although a talent list has not been released, the shows will feature many of the same wrestlers who were on the NWA Showcase broadcasts that aired on DISH Network's Colours channel.
"The 'Showcase' was a great first step in getting our talent ready for television and the best thing we could have done is gone dark for a while," said NWA executive director Robert Trobich in a press release. "Our new show ... will continue to highlight some of the great talent you have already been introduced to while creating an opportunity for us to expand and be in the middle of the entertainment industry."
Caldwell's Analysis: The NWA firmly believes it has a vision for bringing an old-school wrestling look and feel to the modern era. They've gone through several different phases of trying to push their product onto the mainstream market through TV and local touring.
While the company has taken a slight blow recently during a tough stretch in the U.S. economy, Big Vision handling the production-side of filming a series of TV shows should free up the NWA to pursue TV distribution deals that could generate additional revenue beyond their live event touring. One NWA executive told me he's walking away with money in his pocket after each of their live events, which is his way of measuring the success of a show.
Pushing the product out on TV that reaches more homes than on Colours will be key. International TV distribution is essential, as well, with NWA having a prominent affiliate in Australia. Starting to film again in Hollywood is another step for the organization that is slowly trying to rebuild its image.
FYI: Big Vision Entertainment has produced and distributed several titles available at major retailers, such as Best Buy, including the "Forever Hardcore," "Hardcore Homecoming," "Heroes of World Class director's cut," and Ultimate Insiders interview series. Big Vision also produced the WSX shows that aired for one season on MTV. Big Vision has worked with NWA on several TV taping projects in the past. Big Vision's DVD catalog.
