MMATorch Briefing: Antonio Silva files suit against the CSAC; More fights announced for March and April; Jason Bent begins previewing UFC 93 Jan 13, 2009 - 11:46:01 PM
We begin a very long and event-filled stretch of shows in the world of Mixed Martial arts tomorrow night with the debut of the UFC Primetime: Penn vs. St. Pierre program on Spike TV. This three part series is modeled after HBO's successful 24/7 program, and will showcase the two main eventers at the month's end UFC 94 pay-per-view, Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn. That will air every Wednesday leading up to the show.
Before we get to UFC 94, however, there are still three, count'em, three events taking place (two of which are on pay-per-view). That stretch begins on Saturday with a tape-delayed UFC 93 pay-per-view from Dublin, Ireland, headlined by a lightweight tilt between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson. Jason Bent is breaking down the five main card fights this week in a series of articles, three of which are available for your reading pleasure:
Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang - EXCERPT: "Alan Belcher is not expected to win this fight at all, but if he comes in with the mentality that he has nothing to lose and utilizes his kickboxing skills it is possible that he could pull off the upset. It most certainly would be an upset, and Belcher is a decided underdog, but he is a live dog and should be looking to prove just as much against an opponent who is looking to do the same."
Also on the main site today is a story on suspended former EliteXC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Silva filing suit against the California State Athletic Commission. Silva was suspended following a positive test for Boldenone in July, which his camp to this day contends was a false positive from a non-banned over-the-counter supplement. Silva came under fire for competing on a card in Japan on January 4th despite the suspension, but his manager says he needs to fight to pay his medical bills. Silva has acromegaly, which is the same condition of the pituitary gland that both the Big Show and Andre the Giant have/had. The full story can be seen here.
