Guest Editorial: How WWE is Rebuilding the Divas Division
By Chris Davidson of Lynchburg, Va., PWTorch reader

It was reported today that WWE has signed Sara Del Rey to a Developmental contract and that she is currently going through the medical clearance process before she heads to FCW. Del Rey, widely considered one of the best female wrestlers in the world, signs with WWE just weeks after California based Buggy Nova made her debut in FCW. While neither of these women are less than attractive, they both represent the atypical woman that WWE looks for in a Diva.

Nova has a more “alternative” look, reminiscent of Lita, while Del Rey is a heavy-hitter known for facing men in the ring, even challenging for the CHIKARA Grand Championship later this month against Eddie Kingston.

It seemed for some time that WWE was making a change in the Divas division, especially after they signed Kharma last year. Due to the tragic circumstances surrounding her lengthy departure from the ring, it seems WWE is making alternative plans by signing women who don’t just look good, but can kick some tail as well.

The Divas division as of late has been focused on three women: Layla, Beth Phoenix, and A.J. Other women have been in matches, of course, but Beth held the title for a lengthy period, Layla is the current title holder, and A.J., when she isn’t confusing everyone with which main-eventer she’s going to kiss this week, is a solid wrestler who got over with a “crazy chick” gimmick.

Besides these three women, and the formerly flatulent Natalya, WWE seems to have few actual workers in the Divas division who could put on much better matches than the division has been known for the last few years.

For the time being, Divas matches will most likely continue to be just a few women fighting for a title in 90-second-or-less matches that will probably end in a roll-up. However, if and when Kharma comes back, the entire division could change. Buggy Nova and Sara Del Rey will have had some time to get used to the WWE style and these six or seven women will be able to put on some quality matches. Kharma can easily be the monstrous heel she was beginning to be last year, plus with some quality heel and face work, the Divas division could rival TNA’s Knockouts. With some time, the division could attract an audience looking for quality wrestling rather than just eye-candy in skimpy costumes.

WWE definitely has their work cut out for them in making the Divas division more exciting, but if they keep signing big-name female wrestlers, the days of weak Divas matches may be numbered.
