Guest Editorial - Blown Save: The Brock Lesnar Debacle
By Kevin Hudson of Aurora, Ontario, Canada, student

Brock Lesnar at the UFC PPV Saturday night has to be the wake up call for Vince McMahon (unless he orchestrated it). I mean, Brock Lesnar was at the UFC show this weekend, something Brock rarely did while under contract for the company. And, during the post-show conference, Dana White made little attempt to hide the fact that it was far more then a random occurrence. I don't think there should be a doubt in anyone's mind that Brock is already thinking of getting back into the UFC in some capacity as soon as he can.

Brock's under contract with WWE until next year's WrestleMania, and obviously White and Lesnar are smart enough to realize that the legal complications would not be worth trying to get out of the deal before the end of its term. But, it's obvious Brock is already looking ahead to the end of his current WWE run. And, can you blame him?

I truly believe that WWE's insecurity when it comes to the John Cena character has already greatly diminished the impact Brock's return should have had. In having Cena come out of nowhere - after what was up to that point one of the most unique spectacles ever in a WWE ring - to beat Lesnar at Extreme Rules and all but destroy the momentum of his character, WWE threw an outstanding opportunity out the window. And, not only did it upset fans who are tired of the Super Cena character, but it seems to have soured Lesnar himself on his professional wrestling return.

Now, it seems all but certain that if and when Lesnar locks up with Triple H, he'll lose his second match and potentially destroy the threat and credibility of his character. Couple that with McMahon focused on maintaining this invincible, Hulk Hogan-like mystique surrounding the Cena character, most of the spontanaety and intrigue of the product is non-existent the second Cena steps into the ring. The situation involving Lesnar's loss at Extreme Eules is certainly not the first time Cena has been wrongly booked to win a match, but it should be the most alarming. Lesnar's return should have been at least a slight rejuvenation for a product that is constantly alienating its older audiences, but instead was another step in cementing Cena as the only roster member that any one should care about.

Lesnar seems to have his eyes already set on a return to the octagon. When he goes following next year's Mania, I think he'll be joined by a large number of the older WWE audience that is simply tired of mind-numbing predictability, and a lack of growth and change to the dynamics of the product.

Three-hour Raws starting this July would not seem all that bad with an unstoppable monster in Brock Lesnar tearing through all opponents, and a group of young wrestlers making names for themselves. But the idea of three-hours of constant advertising for the latest version of John Cena merchandise is a prospect that excites few outside of the Cena Fanbase.

While Brock Lesnar couldn't possibly single-handedly rejuvenate the struggling WWE product, he certainly could have been a major component. Instead, WWE seems to have blown yet another opportunity. And, this time, I'm not so sure that the damage done won't be irreparable.
