GUEST EDITORIAL
By Naveed Islam from Dhaka, Bangladesh. PWTorch.com Reader
While this year's Wrestlemania is no slouch in terms of match cards there are some bad choices and some missed opportunities that have been left along the way when WWE booked this card. Fans will be treated to Flair vs. Michaels but they will could also have seen MVP taking on Matt Hardy or CM Punk taking on Shelton Benjamin. Most of the original Mania card is in tact but some changes have been made to make this Wrestlemania stand out as one of the greatest Pay-Per-Views of the year.
WWE United States Championship
MVP (Champion) vs. Matt Hardy
This feud has been building for months and there has yet to be a pay off. Hardy should have returned a few weeks ago to make the challenge and lock a one-on-one encounter between himself and MVP for Mania. Hardy reverses the Playmaker for a Twist of Fate and grabs the win in a hot opener.
"Money in the Bank" Ladder Match
Jeff Hardy vs. Ken Kennedy vs. Chris Jericho vs. Umaga vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. John Morrison
Sub CM Punk, Shelton Benjamin and MVP for Rey, Chavo and Umaga and we have ourselves a truly epic MITB. Umaga was recently running for the Mania main event with Hardy, the Game, Michaels, Jericho and JBL at No Way Out so he's much more than a midcarder. Rey and Chavo are both fresh off title chases and their fast paced styles compliment this match. Jeff Hardy edges out Y2J and co. to capture the coveted briefcase.
WWE Women's Championship
Beth Phoenix (Champion) w/ Santino Marella vs. Candice Michelle w/ Maria
Special Guest Referee: Snoop Dogg
WWE's Women's division isn't TNA's, so it's hard to book a top feud without adding the sex appeal factor. Beth is flanked by her new best friend Santino, who share a common hatred for the Playboy Duo. Santino's ringside antics infuriates Snoop Dogg but allows time for Phoenix to get the advantage and pin Candice for the win. Maria and Candice strip Phoenix down to her unmentionables and share a laugh with Snoop.
Belfast Brawl
JBL vs. Finlay
Bradshaw and Finlay go Extreme for this encounter and both men bleed for the hot Orlando crowd. Finlay pulls out Hornswoggle from under the ring, in an homage to simpler times, but even the Little Bastard isn't enough to best Bradshaw. JBL pins Finlay after another unprotected chair shot to the head.
ECW World Championship
CM Punk (Champion) vs. Shelton Benjamin
Punk wins at No Way Out and pins Chavo again in their rematch on Tuesday night. General Manager Estrada books a tournament to name the number one contender for Mania, pitting competitors from SmackDown and ECW against each other. Shelton pins Kane to be named as Punk's opponent. Punk pins Benjamin after a GTS and offers Shelton a handshake as a sign of respect. But a bitter Shelton walks away as the ECW Champion looks on.
The Biggest vs. The Best
Big Show vs. Floyd "Money" Mayweather
Last Man Standing
This feud had the potential to become one of the hottest angles of 2008 but eventually went from sizzling to just plain dull. Show's posse of lower card Heat wrestlers rumble with Mayweather's boys at ringside while back in the ring Show knocks Mayweather out with the largest fist in the world. The referee counts to 10 and Big Show is victorious while Vince McMahon anxiously awaits highlights of this match to be shown on Sports Center.
Career Threatening Match
Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels
The "Old Yeller" promo should have happened a few weeks earlier to clearly draw the lines between these two legends. Michaels pulls out the Showstopper from within him and ends Flair's career. He eventually comes to his senses as Flair realizes his career is over. The two men hug and leave while the camera locks on Flair's robe left behind at ringside.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Edge (Champion) vs. The Undertaker
The Undertaker should have won the Royal Rumble and in the weeks leading up to Wrestlemania, Edge and the Guerrero Family should have been trying to stop this from happening. At No Way Out, Edge and his cronies face off against Batista, Taker and Rey where if Edge's team wins, Taker is off Mania. After the babyface team wins, Edge and the Edgeheads focus on ensuring Edge's win at Mania. The Edgeheads are named as Enforcers while Chavo becomes Special Guest Referee for this No Holds Barred contest. Taker takes out Edge's henchman as Teddy Long calls out a referee and helps Taker get the pinfall.
Battle of the Brands
John Cena (Raw) vs. Batista (SmackDown)
The two men who have carried the flags of their respective brands for years, wrestle in what many fans of this generation consider to be a dream match. Both men get the benefit of being involved in one of the top matches at Mania and gives fans a true spectacle of a match. Cena pins Big Dave to get the win for Raw.
WWE Championship
Randy Orton (Champion) vs. Triple H
Orton and Hunter have a long history that goes all the way back to 2004. I think watching the two play mind games with each other over the course of six weeks after No Way Out would have been a treat. However, a simple Singles match isn't enough to make this Wrestlemania history-worthy. Jeff Hardy appears on stage before the opening bell, drops the briefcase on stage and takes his place between Hunter and Orton. The match is now a Triple Threat! Hardy finally pins Randy and captures the Gold (while still holding the Intercontinental Title) on the Grandest Stage of Them All. Matt Hardy appears and he and Jeff celebrate their success at Mania.
Hardy faces Triple H and Orton one more time at Backlash and then goes one-on-one with Orton at Judgment Day and transitions into a feud with JBL afterwards. Come SummerSlam Triple H has turned heel and is ready to face Hardy and get back the WWE Title. Hardy has a few more rematches with MVP until the Draft gives him some new opponents. CM Punk finally drops the title to Shelton Benjamin and is traded to RAW and eventually holds Jeff Hardy's Intercontinental Title. Taker holds the belt for a very long time, facing the likes of Edge, Batista, a heel Kane and whoever the Draft sends his way.
WWE releases the Wrestlemania XXIV DVD, where the Special Features section chronicles that last 24 hours of Ric Flair's career as an active wrestler in WWE.
