GUEST EDITORIAL
By John Kelly of Wagner College, PWTorch.com reader
Finally, after 360-plus days, WrestleMania weekend is back and every wrestling fan's imagination, which is generally in a constantly simmering state, begins to boil over with possibilities. WrestleMania 24 is full of potential memories to cherish in future years- with Flair's probable last match, Undertaker's continued streak, Big Show-Mayweather, etc. However, the mind of a wrestling fan is always re-evaluating what could have been. For instance, what would have happened if Vince had brought in the n.W.o, Ric Flair, Eric Bischoff, Goldberg and Scott Steiner right after WrestleMania X-7? Austin-Goldberg headlining WrestleMania X-8? It's a shudder inducing mindset wrestling fans have. We love what we watch, but a large part of us wants to see it done slightly differently. So, with all that in mind, here is a slightly different (and not ridiculously unrealistic) version of WrestleMania 24:
Tag Team Championship/Unification Match
Paul London & Brian Kendrick vs. John Morrison & The Miz
-Regal, Armando Estrada, and Teddy Long make a deal to have one tag title and have that team represented on every show. It comes down to these teams for the gold at WrestleMania. London & Kendrick, who have Maria as their valet, beat Morrison & Miz to become the unified champions.
Women's Championship Match
Beth Phoenix vs. Mickie James
-Simple build- Mickie keeps trying to beat Beth Phoenix and can't. But that doesn't stop her. She beats Victoria, Melina & Jillian Hall to win the #1 contenders match. Beth is not impressed because she's beaten her so many times. Mickie beats Beth via DQ when Beth gets scared she'll lose and pushed the referee down.
Money in the Bank Ladder Match:
Chris Jericho vs. Finlay vs. Matt Hardy vs. MVP vs. Mr. Kennedy vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. C.M. Punk vs. Ric Flair
-I would want this to be Ric Flair's last match, for reasons that will become quite obvious in a few paragraphs. There are other natural feuds here as well, with Matt Hardy-MVP, Punk-Benjamin and Finlay-Kennedy that would have been fostered and developed from the Royal Rumble. Jericho, after his disappointing run with JBL, would turn heel and start talking trash to Ric Flair about his retirement storyline. In the end, it would come down to Y2J & Flair, chopping and punching away at the top of the ladder. Y2J gets the advantage and reaches for the belt. Flair gives him a low blow, an eye poke and a chop to the chest. He pulls down the briefcase for the win. Flair isn't done yet in the theme for the announcers.
ECW Championship Match
Chavo Guerrero vs. Kane
-Kane beat The Great Khali to be #1 contender at a house show- who wants to see this on TV? Kane is put over as a monster at WrestleMania and destroys Chavo in under three minutes. Kane will have a lengthy reign as ECW champ.
"The Biggest vs. The Best"
Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. Big Show
-Mayweather is the heel from the beginning. And he comes out with an even larger posse. Shane McMahon is also heavily involved, and appears with Mayweather. Big Show-Shane have quite a history, so that could be played up. In the training videos, Shane has hired Big Daddy V & Mark Henry to spar with Floyd. Two weeks before WrestleMania, they have the press conference. Big Show is jumped, by Mayweather's posse, Big Daddy V & Mark Henry. Big Show gets hurt, and Mayweather hits him three or four times to the face. This is where the WWE guys run down and a huge melee ensues. The next week, Big Show shows up and gets to Mayweather and grabs him to throw him, but Shane gets in the way, allowing Big Daddy V & Mark Henry to attack him again, and they brutalize his ribs, which are taped for the PPV.. This puts Big Show as a huge underdog. At the PPV, Big Show tosses Mayweather from inside the ring onto his posse. Some members jump in and it's ruled a DQ. Big Show takes them all out, and then finally takes out Big Daddy V & Mark Henry, but he's still hurting. Mayweather comes in and hits Big Show in the face, again. But this time, Big Show eats them, grabs Mayweather and gives him a chokeslam through the ring, leading to EMTs rushing to the ring.
-Hall of Fame ceremony
-Obligatory skit which shows a lot of old quasi-humorous gimmicks
World Heavyweight Championship/Triple Threat Match
Edge vs. The Undertaker vs. Batista
-I know it was already a main event for Smackdown at a PPV, but it's the right match to do. Undertaker & Batista have a three stages of Hell match at No Way Out- Singles, Street Fight, Buried Alive- to determine who would be the #1 contender. Edge interferes during the final fall, and he and EdgeHeads bury both men. This leads to the Triple Threat match, under Sudden Death rules. Edge begins to use both men's finishers during matches, and gets the better of both of them every week leading to the PPV- neither Batista or Undertaker get their hands on Edge. Undertaker pins Batista with a second Tombstone to win the World Heavyweight Championship, ending their feud, as they both took out Edge in the match. Edge can say he was never pinned and in a heelish fashion, claim he's still undefeated at WrestleMania. Batista turns heel after the match.
-WWE Championship/Six Pack Challenge-Elimination Rules
Special Guest Enforcer: "Stone" Cold Steve Austin
Randy Orton vs. John Cena vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels vs. JBL vs. Umaga
-The Six Pack Challenge was something the WWE has never used again, outside of a Hell in a Cell or Elimination Chamber match. For this to work, there would have been no Elimination Chamber matches at No Way Out. After a big six man tag, a wild brawl breaks out. The next week, William Regal announces that Stone Cold Steve Austin will be the special guest enforcer, with explicit authority to make a three count if a referee is unavailable. SCSA ends up giving the Stunner to each wrestler involved in the match before WrestleMania, except Orton. At the PPV, the order of elimination would be JBL, Umaga. HBK, Triple H and John Cena, with Randy Orton retaining the WWE Title. JR is in shock. Then all of a sudden, Ric Flair's music hits. He comes down, carrying the briefcase. He cashes in his Money in the Bank opportunity. Orton takes out the referee before the match begins, with an RKO. Flair clips Orton's leg, which he hurt in the match. He wraps on the figure four and SCSA comes in the ring and Orton taps out to give Flair the WWE Championship, which Austin hands to him. Orton confronts Austin after the match, and receives a Stunner. They toast a beer, and Austin leaves to give Flair all his glory.
