Guest Editorial: John Cena's pectoral injury couldn't have come at a better time for the company Oct 2, 2007 - 7:38:23 PM

GUEST EDITORIAL

An injury is never a good thing. Since they are unpredictable, they usually halt storyline plans, sometimes having a sufficient impact on a building storyline and in that it completely kills its steam by putting together a haphazard feud or rushed match on a pay-per-view. It disappoints the fans, as they have bought tickets to the show or bought it on pay-per-view to see a certain match and now that's not going to happen.

Randy Orton and John Cena's feud has been built (and built well) for the last several months with this Last Man Standing match presumably being the big blow-off. And now, Cena is gone and the title is vacant. John Cena has ended his year-long streak in a very anti-climactic way.
I know what you're thinking - how is any of this positive? Well, they say some things are a blessing in disguise and this injury is definitely a blessing in disguise. It will allow for two things (1) the establishment of a heel Randy Orton champion and (2) allowing John Cena to return fresh as a heel, the thing WWE has been seemingly waiting to pull the trigger on for quite some time.
What have the WWE fans been complaining about when it comes to John Cena? They say "Cena is being shoved down our throats." They have been saying, "Cena is overexposed." Well, now he is gone. He is off the television, and if WWE keeps him off the television for his eight month hiatus, his return will really mean something, and most likely, WWE fans will be happy to see him back.
And when he returns, what will make his return even more meaningful will be a change in character. Cena is being stripped of the title without ever losing it. This is a key heel "edge" to spin off of. A cocky Cena could return with a chip on his shoulder, saying the fans were happy he was injured. And of course, he will claim that he deserves a run at the title since he never officially lost it. This return will give John Cena a whole new batch of opponents to feud with (Jeff Hardy, for example or cross-promotionally with C.M. Punk or Batista). Fans will feel justified in boo-ing him and Cena could have the potential to generate the same type of heat that Edge so marvelously did the past three years.
And if WWE doesn't choose to go this route, they still have a Cena-free product for the next eight months, which gives them time to revamp and reset Cena's character and if nothing else, let's Cena's absence go on long enough to let fans actually anticipate his return when the WWE starts hyping it. Cena returning as a face to feud with Kennedy could be hot, too, but let's be honest - we're all predicting this. Let's give the fans something different and let's give Cena something different and let his character show some real edge and some real change.
