GUEST EDITORIAL
By Chuck DeWolf ofJacksonville, Fla., PWTorch.com reader
While waiting to watch the Aug. 6 edition of Monday Night Raw, I was hoping McMahon's appearance meant that he was going to step up and make some positive changes. So much for wishful thinking. Does McMahon really think that he is that untouchable, that he would call out the U.S. Congress and the I.R.S.? To me, that is like going up to Nancy Benoit's family and giving them the finger. Any argument suggesting that it is the "Mr. McMahon" character that is saying these things and not Vince McMahon's true feelings is a load of crap. They are the one in the same and that is how the U.S. Congress and the I.R.S. is going to view it also.
Anyone who thought that this Raw was a good/great show and that McMahon did a good job of so called "resetting" the brand, has no clue of what a good/great show actually is. I have been a wrestling fan for 42 years, since I was five years old. I have seen or have gone to more live wrestling shows than most of the fans who read or contribute to this site have. While I am not a the type of fan who analyzes the wrestling industry, studies every little detail and thinks I am an expert or believes that I can write better shows like some do. I am just a long time wrestling fan. Most young fans now are "Sports Entertainment" fans. Yes, I am Old School. Now I don't mean to insult anyone, I am not saying every young or older fan are not true wrestling fans. I am talking about the ones who thought this show had made positive steps forward in improving their product.
There was nothing positive that I saw. Look at the battle royal, first of all, McMahon said that he wanted everyone that is under a WWE contract to out in the ring. Missing: John Cena, Randy Orton, Snitsky, Jeff Hardy. Did anyone really think the Sandman was going to GM? While William Regal is not a bad choice, what do they have him do, "The Dating Game." That's sports entertainment?
Then at the end of the show we get an almost exact re-run of the limo explosion. Everyone in the same place, doing the same thing. This time he gets stopped by Coachman. Now a paternity suit. There is talk that McMahon fathered his own grandchild. I hope that is just a rumor and not the direction it is going. Incest would not be a good TV. Whatever the plans are for this storyline is, it is going to stink.
With the true lack of personal character of McMahon, and the way he is treating the whole situation with the U.S. Congress, my most sincere hope is that the U.S. Congress shows they have bigger grapefruits than McMahon could ever hope for. They nail his sorry ass to the wall for the wrestling world to see, that people's lives are more important than putting on a show with men who are on steroids, who can't really put on a wrestling match but has the big muscled body that he likes.
The ratings went up this week. Of course it would go up. People tuned in to see what McMahon was going to say. Will the ratings still be up next week? I find it hard to think the ratings would after suffering through this show. Think about this: Would McMahon be acting the way he is toward his current situation if it was Triple H and not Chris Benoit that killed his wife, child, and himself? No. He would be taking all kinds of steps to prevent it from happening again. He would not be trying to sweep the whole mess under the rug. All I am saying is, is it too much ask that when we tune in on Monday nights to be able to watch a show with solid matches, believable characters, and no McMahon's in site.
Maybe what the WWE needs it to go back to the old school basics and have fans believe that what they see is real and not a side show. Dusty Rhodes was a World Champion without a steroid body and people watched great matches. It can happen again.
