RADICAN’S PWG REVIEW SERIES
“MATT RUSHMORE”
OCT. 19, 2013
RESEDA, CALIF.

unnamed_3.jpg

The show started with Mount Rushmore in the ring. Nick Jackson emptied a bag of cans in the ring much to the dismay of Excalibur. Matt Jackson got on the mic and did a survey while doing a Scott Hall impression. He asked the fans if they came to see PWG or Mount Rushmore. The fans booed and Matt threw a toothpick at a fan in the front row. Matt said the best tag team ever was the Mother F’n Young Bucks. He said they had been put in the ring with the weakest whore in the world, Candice LeRae. Matt said the fans were going to experience a superkick party and the fans went nuts and chanted “Superkick, superkick.” Legion Hall Larry threw a broom into the ring and Kevin Steen tossed it back out, which got big heat from the fans. Steen got the broom back and dropped an elbow on it, which drew a “Holy s---“ chant from the fans .

Excalibur said PWG made all of their careers. He said they had disrespected BOLA and Kyle O’Reilly, who won BOLA. Excalibur said they had come out and taken away the one thing that gave his life meaning. He said they had disrespected Joey Ryan and Candice LeRae. Excalibur fired up and said Mount Rushmore had also disrespected recycling. Excalibur told The Young Bucks they would be in a title match tonight with Rick Knox as the ref. Steen blocked the Young Bucks from superkicking Excalibur. Steen told them they couldn’t superkick him because they need him for commentary. Cole got on the mic and told Excalibur he was lucky Steen was there. Cole said it would be a glorious night for Mount Rushmore and they were the only reason the fans came to the show. Cole’s comment drew a mixed reaction. Cole said Steen would rip ACH apart. He then said the Young Bucks would prove once again they’re the best tag team in the world. Cole said he would prove that he carried Future Shock for years and years. All four men then held up their titles, which got a mixed reaction.

1 - B-Boy & Willie Mack vs. PPRay (Peter Avalon & Ray Rosas)

Mack and Rosas had a fast paced exchange off the ropes during the early going. Rosas hit a forearm, but Mack ended up surprising him with a pounce a short time later and the fans went nuts. Mack and B-Boy worked over Avalon for a long period of time, but Avalon ended up whipping B-Boy into a big kick from Rosas on the apron. Rosas hit a neck breaker on B-Boy using his fanny pack. He then placed the fanny pack on top of B-Boy and counted to 2 on his own. The fans chanted “Fanny pack, fanny pack.” B-Boy fired back and tagged in Mack, who ran wild. Avalon managed to fire right back on Mack with a pair of running dropkicks in the corner. Avalon and Rosas worked over Mack. The crowd tried to rally behind Mack after he took a combination of maneuvers for a two count. Mack had Rosas on top of him, but he countered and hit an ace crusher and the fans fired up. B-Boy got the hot tag and ran wild. B-Boy hit a Gibson driver on Rosas, but Avalon broke up the pin. Roderick Strong was on commentary and he was upset up B-Boy stealing one of his finishers.

The action broke down and Rosas wiped out Mack with a big splash to the floor. Mack broke up a sure pin on B-Boy and began suplexing Rosas and Avalon. Avalon and Rosas hit a series of moves on Mack capped by a Yoshi Tonic, but Mack broke up the pin with a double stomp on Rosas and the fans went nuts and chanted “Tag team wrestling, tag team wrestling.” Avalon went for a springboard to the floor, but Mack caught him and powerbombed him into the ringpost. B-Boy hit a shining wizard on Rosas and a big brainbuster for the win.

WINNERS: Willie Mack & B-Boy. This was a really good opening match. There was short lull in the middle, but things really picked up down the stretch with both teams getting some good nearfalls. The finish was crazy with Mack powerbombing Avalon into the ringpost on the outside after catching him when he went for a springboard. Mack then lit up Avalon with kicks before finishing him off with a brainbuster. These guys know how to set the bar high for a PWG show. (***1/4)

2 - Kevin Steen vs. A.C.H.

Steen had tassels on his arms and legs. The fans chanted for him to shake the ropes because he was wearing Ultimate Warrior colored tassels. ACH ended up shaking the ropes, so Steen jumped him from behind to start the match. Steen dominated the action early. ACH made a brief comeback, but Steen took him down and hit a running senton on ACH while he was in the seated position on the mat and the fans gasped. Steen mocked ACH as he tried to get to his feet. ACH mounted a comeback and hit a big bulldog for a two count. The fans chanted for ACH. ACH sent Steen to the floor with a hurricanrana from the apron. ACH tried to fake Steen out with a dive and Steen ran right into the ring and wiped him out with a big clothesline. ACH fired back and went for a springboard dive, but Steen simply walked out of the way and he crashed and burned. Steen went to the bar and ordered a drink. Steen held up his drink and told the fans it was water before dumping it on ACH’s head from the apron.

ACH and Steen went back and forth on the floor until Steen lifted ACH and dumped him crotch-first into the ringpost. ACH mounted another comeback and hit an Arabian moonsault to the outside and the fans fired up and chanted for ACH. ACH signaled that he was going for a gorilla press, but instead he went for a double underhook. Both men exchanged counters until Steen lifted ACH and tossed him into the turnbuckles. Steen went for a cannonball in the corner, but ACH got out of the way. He connected with a springboard ace crusher, but Steen kicked out at the last second. Steen went for the F5, but ACH countered it into a stunner. Steen rolled to the floor and ACH connected with Air Jordan a short time later. ACH followed up with a big frog splash inside the ring, but Steen kicked out at the last second. They battled up top a short time later and ACH ended up hitting a sunset bomb. He locked in the Koji clutch a short time later, but Steen eventually got the ropes to break the submission. ACH went for a sunset bomb off the apron, but Steen held on to the ropes. Steen brought ACH up to the apron by the nose, but ACH broke free and hit a Pele kick. Steen caught ACH charging at him and nailed him with a powerbomb on the apron. Steen hit a package piledriver a short time later for the win.

Steen got on the mic after the match and put over ACH. He teased a handshake, but ended up nailing ACH with another package piledriver. Steen then ran back into the ring and hit yet another package piledriver and the fans booed.

WINNER: Kevin Steen. This was a really good match. ACH played the underdog role here and the crowd was really into his comebacks. Steen seemed to have an answer for ACH every time he mounted a comeback during the match, but ACH finally mounted some offense and the crowd fired up late in the match. Steen’s post-match attack on ACH was a good way to get the fans to turn on Steen given ACH’s popularity in PWG. (***1/4)

3 - Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Barreta) vs. A.R. Fox & Rich Swann

On commentary, Steen explained his reasons for joining Mount Rushmore. He said he took offense to everyone not loving him. Steen said he cried when Generico left he didn’t cry because he was happy for him, but because he was jealous. They did a spot where Taylor had Fox in a Figure Four. Swann and Trent kept running into the ring and turning them over so their partner had the submission advantage, which was pretty funny. Fox and Swann cleaned house and both did fake dives. Fox ended up hitting a kick flip off the post to the floor onto Taylor and Trent. Fox and Swann then took turns doing Scott Hall and D-Low Brown poses and the fans applauded. Fox got cut off and Taylor hit him with a slow motion swanton over the ropes and the fans popped huge. Fox cut off Trent and tagged in Swann, who began working him over. Trent fired back on Swann and Taylor took a picture of Trent blowing kisses while holding Swann in a headlock. Swann fired back and hit a double rebound ace crusher on Trent and Taylor.

Fox got the hot tag and ran wild on Trent and Taylor. Fox was on absolute fire and he began hitting dives through the ropes on opposite sides of the ring onto Trent and Taylor. Fox hit a huge flip dive over the top onto Trent to cap the sequence and the fans went nuts. The action continued at a rapid pace with Swann and Fox hitting a combination of moves on Trent, but Taylor made the save. Taylor ended up hitting a huge splash mountain powerbomb on Fox, but he kicked out at the last second. Taylor and Trent hit a double chokeslam on Fox, but Swann broke up the pin. They went to a big sequence where everyone hit moves capped by a spinning kick from Swann on Trent. Everyone was down and the fans went nuts. Trent and Taylor got the upper hand. Trent lifted up a knee pad to reveal Chuck Taylor’s face on it. He then hit Swann with a huge flying knee to the head, but Fox broke up the pin. Swann ended up hitting an insane head scissors takedown on Trent that made the crowd gasp. Swann hit a standing 450 and Fox followed up with a top rope 450, but Taylor broke up the pin at the last second. Holy crap! The action continued at a rapid pace until Taylor broke up a double team attempt. Trent leapt up to the top rope and tossed Swann to the mat. Swann had a terrible landing for that bump. Taylor then finished off Fox with the awful waffle for the win.

WINNERS: Best Friends (Trent & Chuck Taylor). If you like fast-paced action, look no further than this match. I thought they lost the crowd a little bit at times given the pacing of the match, but there were some awesome exchanges down the stretch, especially Swann’s crazy headscissors takedown on Trent. (***1/2)

4 - Brian Cage vs. Tomasso Ciampa vs. Anthony Nese vs. Drake Younger - Four-Way match

Ciampa jumped Younger as he made his entrance. Ciampa hit a sick air raid crash on Younger a short time later and it looked like he just about killed Younger, who looked to catch his head on the apron before crashing to the floor. This match is just crazy. Cage and Nese were brawling on the floor and Younger went for a moonsault to the floor and got so much height on it that he caught the light on the ceiling with his foot. The fans went nuts and chanted, “Holy s—t.” Cage had Younger on his shoulders and Nese went for a cross-body, but Cage caught him and tossed both men to the mat. The fans went ballistic after that spot. The match continued at an insane pace, as Younger lifted up Nese and hit a falcon arrow on him into the corner on Ciampa. The crowd went nuts as Cage continued to impress with insane power moves. He caught Younger going for a dive in the delayed vertical suplex position. He held onto Younger for a few seconds before dumping him down to the mat and the fans went nuts once again.

Ciampa hit a series of running knees on Nese in the corner and then he got a running start and wiped out Cage and Younger on the floor with a flip dive over the top. Ciampa then climbed the ropes with Nese on hit back and hit an avalanche air raid crash off the top, but cage broke up the pin. The fans went nuts once again after that sequence. Holy crap! The action continued at an insane pace and Nese ended up lifting up Younger for a one-armed powerbomb to the floor onto Cage and Ciampa. The fans went absolutely crazy and chanted for Nese. Nese set up for a dive, but Ciampa cut him off with huge clothesline. He followed up with project Ciampa, but Cage broke up the pin. Cage and Ciampa went face-to-face. Ciampa flipped him off and they began exchanging strikes in the middle of the ring. Cage ended up countering Ciampa and hit him with several power moves and a sloppy weapon x, but Younger broke up the pin. Younger hit a swinging DDT on Cage followed by Drake’s landing on Ciampa for the win.

WINNER: Drake Younger. This was incredible to watch as it unfolded. There were so many insane sequences that I lost count, but Ciampa and Cage came off like absolute beasts in this match. Nese’s one-armed power bomb on Younger to the floor onto Cage and Ciampa was insane. There were some miscues down the stretch, but overall this was a crazy match that set the crowd on fire. (***3/4)

5 - Johnny Gargano vs. Roderick Strong

Gargano put on a hoodie and was playing games with the crowd putting the hood over his head and then lifting it up a la A.J. Styles. Strong finally had enough and he nailed Gargano with a huge chop. The pace quickened and both men applied their signature submissions briefly before coming to a stalemate and the crowd applauded. The crowd was split with some fans chanting for Gargano and some fans immediately chanting that he sucks. Gargano got the upper hand and began wrenching on Strong’s fingers before releasing the hold. The announcers and the crowd groaned at Gargano’s finger submission, which looked quite painful. Strong fired back and hit a huge chop on Gargano in the corner. Gargano fired back and sent Strong to the outside. He followed up with a running senton off the apron and the fans applauded. The majority of fans were now behind Gargano, although there were some fans that were still chanting that he sucks. Gargano continued the attack on the outside and hit a huge chop on Strong, who was seated in the crowd. Gargano went for a spear through the ropes, but Strong countered it into a sick looking back breaker for a two count.

The action spilled to the floor and Strong nailed a seated Gargano with a series of chops. Strong hit Gargano with another chop inside the ring. Gargano told Strong to bring it, so Strong nailed him with a huge chop and Gargano crumpled to the mat. They went to a sequence off the ropes and both men ended up going for a cross body at the same time and they spilled to the mat as the ref administered the 10 count. Gargano got to his feet first and ran wild on Strong as the fans applauded. Swann went crazy on commentary as both men exchanged kicks to the head. Gargano and Strong went at it on the apron a short time later and Gargano connected with a slingshot DDT for a two count. The fans chanted for Gargano as both men were slow to get to their feet. Gargano went for a basement dropkick through the ropes, but Strong caught him and hit an insane backbreaker on the apron. They went at it up top a short time later. Strong ended up hitting a superplex on Gargano, but he could only get a two count. Strong lifted Gargano over his head, but Gargano managed to elbow his way out of the hold. Strong went for a springboard a short time later, but Gargano caught him with a superkick and followed up with the lawn dart for a nearfall.

Gargano applied the Gargano escape right away. Strong tried to fight his way to the ropes, but Strong countered and went for the Stronghold, but Gargano turned it into a pinning combination for a nearfall. They went to another big exchange and Strong hit the sick kick for a great nearfall and the fans applauded. What a sequence! They went back and forth and exchanged counters until Gargano hit the hurts don’t it for another good nearfall. Both men were slow to get up after that crazy exchange. The fans chanted for both men as they struggled to get to their feet. Strong hit a gut buster, a back breaker, and a Gibson driver on Gargano, but he kicked out at the very last second. That was one nearfall too many in my book. Both men went back and forth. Gargano caught Strong’s arm when he went for a roaring elbow and applied the Gargano escape for the win.

WINNER: Johnny Gargano. This was a really good match that built nicely from start to finish. Both guys had some crazy exchanges late in the match. The counter sequences were brilliantly done, but they seemed to lose a crowd a little bit late in the match when they went to a series of nearfalls. Strong’s sequence of two power moves capped by a Gibson driver definitely should have ended the match given the amount of punishment Gargano had taken prior to that sequence. (***3/4)

6 - PWG Tag Team champions The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson w/Kevin Steen) vs. Joey Ryan & Candice LeRae - PWG Tag Title match

Ryan and LeRae got a big pop during the pre-match introductions. The Young Bucks were greeted with mostly boos. LeRae jumped the Young Bucks during the introductions and hit a double ballplex. Ryan then wiped out the Young Bucks with a dive through the ropes. LeRae went up top and hit a moonsault to the floor to wipe out the Young Bucks. The ref finally called for the start of the match. LeRae hit a head scissors off the top on Matt for a nearfall. What a start to this match! The Young Bucks fired back and got the upper hand. They began working over Ryan inside the ring. The crowd was split chanting for and against the Young Bucks. Ryan cut off Nick and made the tag to LeRae. She went for a dive off the top, but the Young Bucks caught her. She countered them by getting a hip toss on Matt. She continued to get the better of the Young Bucks and the fans went nuts. Steen was very upset on commentary as well. LeRae grabbed Ryan’s hand and walked the ropes into a hurricanrana on Nick off the apron that sent him flying into Matt. The fans went nuts for that crazy spot. Matt ended up tossing Ryan out of the ring before he nailed LeRae with a dropkick through the ropes.

The crowd traded chants of “F--- the Young Bucks” and “Let’s go Young Bucks.” The Young Bucks tossed LeRae into the ring and began working her over. The fans booed as the ref held back Ryan, which allowed Matt to choke LeRae. Nick hilariously did crotch chops from his back at Ryan while LeRae was getting choked in the corner. LeRae eventually mounted a comeback. She managed to duck a dropkick/enzuguri combination in the corner before tagging in Ryan, who ran wild as the crowd chanted his name. Ryan ended up powerbombing Nick onto the back of Matt Jackson for a nearfall. Ryan hit a spear through the ropes to the floor on Nick. LeRae then hit a tilt-a-whirl DDT on Matt. LeRae followed up with a ballplex on Matt. Nick went for a vaginaplex, but Ryan broke it up and called for the vaginaplex on Nick before landing it. LeRae wiped out Nick with a dive through the ropes and Ryan hit a superkick on Matt inside the ring for another nearfall. Ryan ended up with LeRae on him in the tombstone position. The Young Bucks nailed both of them with a pair of double superkicks and the fans went nuts.

Young Bucks went for more bang for your buck on LeRae, but Ryan knocked Nick to the floor and LeRae hit a reverse hurricanrana on Matt. Ryan nailed Matt with a superkick and LeRae covered him, but the ref got pulled to the floor by Nick. Nick went after the ref, but the ref countered him and Nick walked right into a superkick from Ryan. The Young Bucks fired back and countered LeRae, who was going for a reverse hurricanrana and nailed her with a spiked tombstone piledriver off the top, but Ryan dragged the ref to the floor. Nick nailed Ryan with a dive to the outside. LeRae countered another more bang for your buck attempt into a pinning combination on Matt for a nearfall. The Young Bucks cleared Ryan from the ring and finally hit more bang for your buck on LeRae for the win.

WINNERS: The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) to retain the PWG Tag Team Titles. This was an amazing match that was wrestled at an insane pace. LeRae was incredible in this match flying all over the ring, especially when she got a hot tag Ryan. The nearfalls down the stretch were fantastic and Ryan and LeRae constantly found a way to counter more bang for your buck until the finish. The crowd added a ton to this match as they were red hot the entire time. (****1/4)

7 - PWG champion Adam Cole vs. Kyle O’Reilly - PWG Title match

O’Reilly earned this title shot by winning BOLA 2013. O’Reilly offered to hold the ropes open for Cole after he bailed to the outside. Cole went to get back into the ring and O’Reilly kicked the rope right into Cole’s crotch. The fans chanted “Sleazy Kyle” as O’Reilly did the sexy party dance. Both men exchanged a string of pinning combinations before going to a stalemate and the fans applauded and chanted “Kyle’s going to kill you.” O’Reilly got the upper hand, but Cole fired back and nailed him with an enzuguri that sent O’Reilly off the top to the floor. Cole jawed with the fans and they chanted “Eat some s---“ at him as he held O’Reilly in a headscissors submission on the mat. O’Reilly fired back and hit a series of kicks on Cole capped by a leg sweep that sent Cole crashing down to the mat. O’Reilly eventually caught Cole in the cross-arm breaker, but he managed to get the ropes. They ended up battling near the apron and Cole ended up suplexing O’Reilly from the ring to the floor.

O’Reilly fired back on the outside and went for a running dropkick off the apron to the floor, but Cole got up and nailed him with a superkick and the fans booed. Cole went to work on O’Reilly’s leg back inside the ring a short time later. Cole worked over O’Reilly for several minutes. Cole taunted O’Reilly, who fired up and began exchanging blows with Cole in the middle of the ring. Cole ended up hitting a superkick, but O’Reilly bounced off the ropes and hit the pendulum lariat that left both men down on the mat. O’Reilly got a guillotine on Cole a short time later, but Cole countered it into a neck breaker over his knee. They ended up going at it on the apron. Cole ended up getting the better of the exchange and he nailed O’Reilly with a snow plow on the apron. Both men were slow to get to their feet. Cole got back into the ring first. O’Reilly struggled, but managed to beat the 20 count from the ref. Cole immediately nailed Cole with a running knee strike for a two count. Cole kicked out of an inside cradle from O’Reilly and nailed him with another running knee strike for a two count. Cole then applied a figure 4 on O’Reilly. Both men began exchanging slaps in the Figure Four position. O’Reilly finally managed to get the ropes to break the hold.

They ended up battling up top. O’Reilly slipped out from under Cole and swept his legs out. O’Reilly then hit a superplex off the top and a shoulder capture suplex for a two count. They went back and forth and O’Reilly got an arm capture guillotine. Cole tried to fight out of it, but O’Reilly countered it into a triangle. Cole managed to escape and he lit up O’Reilly with a pair of superkicks for a nearfall. The fans went nuts after that hot sequence. Cole signaled that O’Reilly was finished, but O’Reilly kicked his legs out from under him and applied the triangle. Cole escaped, but O’Reilly fired up and hit a swinging DDT and a brainbuster for a nearfall. O’Reilly applied a cross-arm breaker and the fans went nuts. The Young Bucks ran down to the ring, but O’Reilly sent them flying to the floor and nailed both of them with a running dropkick off the apron. Cole kicked O’Reilly’s leg out of the corner and hit the Panama sunrise, but O’Reilly kicked out and the fans went nuts chanting for O’Reilly. The fans chanted “Let’s go Kyle” and “Eat s--- Cole.” O’Reilly got the cross-arm breaker and Cole was tapping, but Steen dragged the ref out of the ring. The ref tried to stop Steen from hitting the package piledriver on O’Reilly, but Steen nailed him with the F5. Steen then hit a package piledriver on O’Reilly and Cole covered and another ref came down and counted the pin.

The crowd chanted “This is bulls—“ after the match. The Young Bucks got into the ring and put the boots to O’Reilly. Steen and the Young Bucks continued to work over O’Reilly. Fox and Swann ran down to the ring to help Cole, but they were quickly cut off. Excalibur asked if this is how every PWG show was going to end from now on. The fans chanted for Younger to come out and he ran down to the ring, but the Young Bucks nailed him with a double superkick. The fans chanted for Candice LeRae to come down to the ring as the attack from Mount Rushmore continued. Several babyfaces ran down to the ring forcing Mount Rushmore to bail to the floor. The fans chanted for O’Reilly. Gargano got on the mic and said every pro wrestler wants to work in PWG. The fans chanted “PWG, PWG.” Gargano said he loves this place and he loves the fans. The Young Bucks acted like they wanted to go to sleep while Gargano was talking. Gargano said he was sick of Mount Rushmore. The fans chanted “F--- those four.” Gargano said he hadn’t been in PWG long, but he made Kevin Steen tap out recently. Gargano said he had an idea for the next show and he challenged Cole to a title match, which got a mixed reaction. The fans chanted for O’Reilly. O’Reilly told Gargano if he beat Cole for the PWG Title, he would be Gargano’s first challenger. Gargano said Cole may have three people watching his back, but he has the whole locker room and all of the fans watching his back. Gargano told Cole to look him in the eye and he told him that he would have to kill him to stop him from winning the title. The fans chanted for Gargano, who raised O’Reilly’s hand to end the show.

WINNER: Adam Cole to retain the PWG World Title. This was a really good match. It was a bit slow at the beginning, but the pace picked up after Cole worked over O’Reilly’s leg for a long period of time. They had some really hot exchanges down the stretch and the fans were buying into the fact that O’Reilly was going to beat Cole until the Young Bucks and Kevin Steen interfered. I’m normally not a fan of finishes like this, but it made sense to get more heat on the Mount Rushmore faction going forward. (***3/4)

Overall thoughts: (8.0) – PWG sets such a high standard with just about every show they release that you almost expect every show to be a blow away show. This wasn’t as good as some of PWG’s other releases in 2013, but it was one heck of a show and there wasn’t a bad match on the card.

The highlight of the first half of the card was the Four Way match with Ciampa vs. Nese vs. Cage vs. Younger. These four put on an insane match that was wrestled at a crazy pace. Ciampa and Cage both got a chance to show off their power and the crowd was red hot for the action. Nese and Younger got a chance to shine as well and Nese’s one-armed powerbomb to the floor was pure insanity.

The second half of the show was highlighted by The Young Bucks defending the PWG Tag Titles against Candice LeRae & Joey Ryan. I was expecting this match to be good, but after watching this match, I can see why LeRae & Ryan are getting booked all over the place. LeRae was incredible in this match with her high octane offense. The fans ate up the action when LeRae was running wild and although LeRae & Ryan came up short, I’d love to see another match between these two teams. It was easily the best match on the show.

The main event with Cole facing O’Reilly for the PWG Championship was very good as well. They wrestled at a good pace with Cole working the crowd and targeting O’Reilly’s leg throughout the match. The fans really got into the match down the stretch when the pace of the match increased. The rapid-fire exchanges were well done. Normally I’m not a fan of massive interference in PWG Title matches, but it worked here given that it puts more heat on the Mount Rushmore faction.

The post-match promo from Gargano got a mixed reaction once Gargano challenged Cole to a PWG Title match at the next PWG show. It seemed logical that O’Reilly would get a rematch against Cole, but they covered for it nicely by having O’Reilly tell Gargano that he would be his first challenger if Gargano was able to beat Cole for the title.

PWG puts on really good shows on a consistent basis. The crowd was hot for just about everything on this show, although some of the matches suffered from too many nearfalls. I give this show a strong recommendation. It’s not the best PWG show I’ve seen recently, but it’s still well-worth purchasing.
