"SUPERCARD OF HONOR V
MAY 8, 2010
MANHATTAN, N.Y.
(1) The Briscoes vs. Kenny King & Rhett Titus. Mark hit a moonsault to the outside onto Titus and King that drew a big pop from the fans. This crowd is hot. Titus and King made a comeback and got the heat on Mark. Mark made the hot tag and Jay ran wild. The action broke down and the Briscoes hit stereo fisherman suplexes on King and Titus after they had a miscue. The Briscoes then hit the doomsday device on King for the pin. This was a solid opener. (**3/4)
Titus and King argued after the match. They ended up hugging on the ramp and the crowd booed.
(2) Erick Stevens vs. Grizzly Redwood. Redwood ran wild for a long time until Nana distracted him to give Stevens he advantage. Nobody should need a distraction to help then against Redwood if they're supposed to be taken seriously. Stevens won with the Dr. Bomb after a competitive match. After the match the Embassy tried to beat down Redwood, but Balls Mahoney made the save to a huge pop. This was a fun segment. (**)
(3) Sara Del Rey beat Amazing Kong. The crowd was hot right from the start of this match with both women getting a big reception. Kong couldn't help but smile at the anti-Bubba the Love Sponge and anti-TNA chants. Del Rey worked over Kong's arm, but Kong mounted a comeback. Del Rey got several arm submissions on Kong, but Kong got the ropes. Kong fired back with a spinning back fist and a huge clothesline for a nearfall. Del Rey fired back and nailed Kong with a German suplex, but Kong kicked out at the last second. Castagnoli got up on the apron to distract the ref while Hero tossed her the loaded elbow pad. Del Rey nailed Kong with the loaded pad for the pin. (***)
(4) Christopher Daniels beat ROH Television Champion Eddie Edwards in a non-title match. This was a fantastic match. The crowd was hot from the start. Edwards spent the bulk of the match working over Daniel's leg. Daniels made a comeback and went for the angel's wings, but Edwards countered. Edwards got the Achilles lock on Daniels, but he got the ropes. After some back and forth action, Daniels nailed Edwards with a rock bottom. He then hit the B.M.E for the pin. (***1/2)
(5) Austin Aries beat Delirious via DQ. Aries came out prior to the match and said he was no longer going to wrestle. He said he had gotten his managers license and was now going to be a manager. He said he was sorry for attacking Delirious on HD Net and he wanted Delirious and Daizee Haze to come out so he could apologize to them. Delirious and Haze came out to the ring. Aries gave Haze a flower and then offered Delirious some Golden Snack Cakes. Delirious ended up attacking Aries for several minutes. He then got DQ'd for choking Aries with his tassels. King & Titus ran down to the ring and attacked Delirious. They then went after Haze and tried to set her up for a triple spiked piledriver, but Delirious made the save.
(6) Kevin Steen beat Colt Cabana in a 34th Street Last Man Standing Death Match. This was an insane match. Steen was bleeding right away after Cabana threw him into the guardrail several times. Both men took some dangerous bumps onto a ladder that was introduced into the match and this was hard to watch at times. Cabana eventually introduced some thumbtacks into the match and tossed Steen off the top and into the tacks, but he got to his feet to beat the count. Generico's music played and someone came out dressed like El Generico. Cabana ended up getting jumped from behind by Corino. The fake Generico unmasked and revealed himself to be Corino's son, Colby. He handed Steen a barbed wire bat. Cabana fired up and nailed Corino with a splash in the corner. He then took the bat from Steen and hit him in the head with the bat. Steen beat the count and Corino managed to nail Cabana with a low blow with the bat. Steen then gave Cabana a package piledriver onto the tacks. Cabana beat the count, so Steen put him in the crossface. Corino then told Steen to use the bat, so Steen made Cabana pass out using the crossface with the bat for leverage for the win. The crowd heat was really good for this match, but they took too many risks for this to be enjoyable at times. (***1/2)
(7) ROH World Tag Team Champions Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli beat Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin via DQ. The MCMG showed a lot of fire early mocking Hero & Castagnoli's mannerisms. The match featured some back and forth action early on with both teams hitting some nice double team maneuvers that set the crowd on fire. Hero & Castagnoli got the heat on Sabin for a long period of time until Sabin got the hot tag and ran wild. He hit an incredible looking springboard splash to the outside on Castagnoli that drew a big pop from the crowd. It looked like Hero was going to nail Sabin with the loaded elbow pad when the Briscoes ran down and attacked Hero and Castagnoli. The announcers said they did it so that another team didn't get cheated out of a match like the Briscoes had previously with the loaded pad. The Briscoes managed to clear the ring of Hero and Castagnoli. They went after Del Rey and Jay managed to nail her with the Jay-driller, which made Hero and Castagnoli very angry. The finish fell flat because this was a really good match up until that point, but ROH's hands were tied. (****)
(8) ROH World Hvt. Champion Tyler Black beat Roderick Strong. Black got a mixed response during the formal announcements. The action spilled outside where Strong got the upper hand after dropping Black back-first onto the apron. The crowd chanted "next world champ" at Strong. Strong went after Black's back. The action spilled out to the floor again. Black tried to fire back, but Strong dropped him with a kick to the head. They battled on the apron, but Strong dropped Black on his back again and pushed him into the ring for a nearfall. Black fired back and hit a release suplex. The crowd continued to be split in their support of Black. Strong blocked the paroxysm and hit Black with a reverse suplex for a 2 count. Black went for a superkick, but Strong caught his foot and dumped him to the outside. Strong went for a dive off the apron, but Black caught him and hit an F5. Black hit a doublestomp onto Strong, who was hung up in the corner. He then hit the paroxysm for a nearfall. Black missed a Phoenix splash and Strong nailed him with a huge backbreaker. Strong applied the stronghold, but Black eventually got the ropes. Black hit Gods last gift out of nowhere for a nearfall. Black hit the bucklebomb, but Strong fired up and nailed him with a running boot for a 2 count. Black accidentally superkicked the ref. Strong hit a backbreaker and a running boot on Black. Another official ran out and administered a 2 count. Black attacked Strong from behind while he argued with the ref. Black ended up powerbombing Strong into the ref in the corner an a third ref ran out to count a nearfall. A third ref got bumped and Strong got a nearfall when the original ref recovered to coif a rollup attempt and the crowd went nuts. Strong hit a Gibson driver for a great nearfall moments later after a big exchange of blows in the middle of the ring. Black finally won with a super God's last gift. (****1/2)
Black offered a handshake after the match, but Strong slapped him. They had a brawl after that eventually got broken up. Strong got on the mic and said he had gotten screwed. He promised to end Black's reign as champion.
Overall thoughts: (9.0) This is the best wrestling show I've seen so far this year. The crowd was amazing from start to finish and provided an excellent atmosphere for what was a great night of wrestling and storyline development. Once Kong-Del Rey hit the ring, the show didn't let down and built to a great main event.
There were finally some good backstage segments on this release. I really enjoyed Daniel's backstage promo before his match against Edwards. Daniels went on to have a really good match with Edwards and he is a real asset to ROH at this point. This match also did a nice job of playing into the Daniels-Richards storyline.
The Steen-Cabana match was insane and both guys took a lot of unnecessary bumps around the ring that made me cringe. The storyline revolved around Steen & Corino vs. Cabana & Generico has been really well-executed and this match provided another solid chapter in the feud. I have some reservations about the style of matches these guys are participating in. They're really taking a toll on their bodies with these brutal hardcore style matches.
The MCMG-KOW match was excellent. Sabin & Shelley showed off some great charisma that you never see them deliver in TNA as they showed right off the bat that they weren't going to back down from the KOW. The match itself was an incredible display of tag team wrestling leading into a lousy finish, but politics can be blamed for that.
The Tyler Black hatred in NYC continued on this night, as the crowd gave him a Cena-like reaction during the entire match. The match itself was an excellent low-end MOTYC. Strong dominated the match and he's really grown as an in-ring performer. They put together a chaotic finish with a lot of ref bumps that actually worked out well.
I highly recommend checking this DVD out, as it's well-worth your money.
