San Diego, Calif.
Report by VIP member Eric in Costa Mesa

I woke up and listened to the "Talk is Jericho" podcast. I was intrigued when he said he was facing Kevin Owens as John Cena's replacement, so this might be the first time a match got me to seek a ticket. And set off on an impromptu road trip to San Diego from The OC.

Byron Saxton opened the show with a 10-bell salute to Roddy Piper.

Kevin Owens came to the ring and complained about John Cena's absence, saying he was upset about no U.S. Championship match. He told referee Charles Robinson to declare him the winner by forfeit. But, Chris Jericho came out and challenged Owens to a fight. Owens declined, saying Y2J isn't the U.S. champion, so he's not fighting him. Jericho replied that he beat The Rock & Stone Cold to win the WWE Undisputed Championship right here in San Diego. Y2J slugged Owens and it's on.

(1) Chris Jericho beat Kevin Owens. The match started a bit slow with back and forth offense. At about the 25-minute mark after a series of nearfalls, Jericho jumped out of the pop-up powerbomb. Codebreaker followed for the 1, 2, 3. The crowd was very into this; Owens was booed heavily.

By the way, the house sound system in S.D. is awful...

The next heel with a mic, Bo Dallas, came out to say a few words. His opponent was Neville.

(2) Neville beat Bo Dallas with Red Arrow in 7:00. The Red Arrow is a sight to behold live but otherwise this was an enhancement match.

(3) Rusev (w/Summer Lana) beat R-Truth. Truth came out doing his song. Kids were into the "What's Up," but, again, horrible sound. Rusev came out with Summer "Lana" Rae to face Truth, which is our cue for the restroom and souvenirs. I ask which shirts are selling best. The answer is Roman Reigns, Cena, Dean Ambrose, and Owens. Music in the background indicates Rusev won.

A "Connor's Cure" package airs. My son plugs his ears because it's too sad.

(4) WWE tag champions Prime Time Players (Titus O'Neil & Darren Young) beat New Day Big E. & Xavier Woods) to retain the WWE Tag Titles. The crowd was into this one. To quote Stone Cold, New Day turned chicken s--- into chicken salad. Fun match, lots of comedy and taunting from Kofi on the outside as Big E. worked over D-Young. Hot tag to Titus, tag to Woods. Titus hit a sit-down powerbomb for the pin.

[Intermission]

(5) The Bellas (Divas champion Nikki Bella & Brie Bella) beat Sasha Banks & Naomi. Lots of back and forth action. Fast and hard-hitting. Brie played the babyface in peril. Naomi had a minor wardrobe malfunction, so she wrestled with one hand covering her breast. Brie got the hot tag to Nikki, then Naomi with an accidental "booty" to Sasha's face. Forearm, Rack Attack for the pin. San Diego's hometown girls got the pop of the night.

The next heel with a mic, King Barrett, did his schtick calling himself the King of San Diego and Mexico. Cesaro was his opponent. Smart fans went nuts.

(6) Cesaro beat King Barrett via submission. "King of Swing" chant during the match and Cesaro won with the Sharpshooter. Good match.

The stage crew came out to assemble the unforgiving steel cage. The main event is for the WWE Championship - Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose.

(7) WWE World Hvt. champion Seth Rollins beat Dean Ambrose in a steel cage match to retain the WWE World Hvt. Title. Rollins worked Ambrose's knee the majority of the match. Rollins and Dean then took turns whipping each other with Seth's belt. A hobbled Ambrose continued to find a way to stop Rollins from escaping the cage. Pedigree try blocked, Dirty Deeds blocked, and Rollins slammed the door on Ambrose's face. Pedigree and Rollins escaped for the win.

After the match, Rollins gave another Pedigree, then got a table. But, Ambrose recovered, hit Dirty Deeds, and put Rollins through the table with an elbow drop. The crowd approved to end the night.

WWE returns to San Diego for Raw on Oct. 26.

Biggest Pops: Ambrose, The Bellas, Jericho, Prime Time Players, Cesaro.

Most Heat: Rollins, Owens, New Day.
