London, U.K.
Report by Robin Scannell, PWTorch specialist
I attended the house show at the SSE Arena in London on Wednesday. The lower levels were sold out, but many sections of the upper levels had a lot of empty seats. This is a show with John Cena advertised, and it's a smaller venue that the O2 Arena, which they use for Raw tapings.
Bryon Saxton was the announcer for the evening.
(1) Sheamus beat The Miz (w/Damien Mizdow) with a Brogue Kick. Miz came out to a good amount of heat and cut a promo saying how all the celebrities are in Hollywood, and he's the biggest star we've ever seen. Sheamus came out to a good hometown-ish pop. The actual match was slow, with the comic relief of Mizdow imitating Miz throughout the match making the match palatable.
After the first match, a video of Vince McMahon apologizing for the Network delay aired. This naturally resulted in loud boos from the crowd. Vince seemed to attribute the delay to discussions with partners. He did not announce a new launch date for the Network in the U.K.
(2) Los Matadores (Diego & Fernando) & El Torito beat Slater Gator (Heath Slater & Titus O'Neil) & Hornswoggle in a six-man tag team match. This was subject to a fan vote of match versus a dance-off. The six-man tag won with 52 percent of the vote. It turned into a omedy match, with El Torito getting the pin on Hornswoggle after a hot tag.
(3) Mark Henry beat Xavier Woods with the World's Strongest Slam. Before the match, Woods asked Henry what happened and talked about being a kid in the audience. Henry said he stopped caring, and followed that up by beating Woods in a short match.
Seth Rollins had a promo on the screen hyping his match with Cena.
(4) Divas Champion A.J. Lee beat Paige and Nikki Bella (w/Brie Bella) in a handicap match after a schoolgirl on Nikki. This was announced as a tag team match. However, Nikki enforced "personal assistant" duties upon Brie, demanding that Brie manage her, making the match a handicap match. Paige came out to an initial pop, but played heel, so this quickly faded. "C.M. Punk" chants occurred numerous times during the match. Nikki hit her Rack Attack on A.J., but when Brie Bella distracted Nikki on the apron with a "Yes!" chant, A.J. recovered and rolled up Nikki up for the finish.
(5) Big Show beat United States champion Rusev (w/Lana) vua DQ after Rusev hit Show with a steel chair. Lana cut a promo on how if the United Kingdom had its own title, Rusev would have that, too. Slow match, as expected, but pops for all the big moves. Rusev left Big Show laying, allowing Mark Henry to come to the ring to attack Show. Show managed to recover and knock out Henry to a pop.
[Intermission]
(6) Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) beat Damien Mizdow via submission with the Patriot Lock. After the match, Colter cut a promo asking Real Englishmen to do the "We The People" bit, which the crowd were really into.
(7) Big E. & Kofi Kingston beat Luke Harper & Erick Rowan in a really fun tag match. The crowd loved Harper and Rowan's entrance. However, not using the Wyatt Family music isn't great. All guys looked good in the ring, and all the big moves got a great response from the crowd. After the match, Xavier Woods ran down to the ring to celebrate with the babyfaces.
(8) John Cena beat Seth Rollins in a Street Fight. Seth Rollins came out to a good heel reaction. John Cena came out to a loud, but mixed, reaction. Cena cut a promo hoping for a WrestleMania in London, then Rollins attacked Cena to get the match underway. Rollins cut a number of promos during the match. First, in response to the loud and repeated "You Sold Out" chants, he justified why he sold out. Later, he demanded the crowd chant for him. Chairs and tables were used, with the finish coming from a blocked Curb Stomp from the turnbuckle turning into a top0rope Attitude Adjustment through a table for the three count.
It was announced during the show that Raw and Smackdown are returning to London in April 2015 at the larger O2 Arena. Hopefully by then we'll have the WWE Network. Overall, the show was fun, but the first half of the show seemed light on quality matches and heavy on comedy.
Of the babyfaces, John Cena, Big Show, and Sheamus got the best reactions. While, on the heel side, Seth Rollins, Rusev, and The Miz got the most heat.
