Comic-Con Live Report

I spent the past week in San Diego as a marketing rep during the Comic-Con Convention. Wrestling characters are often described as comic book characters come to life so it is only natural that the wrestling world would have a presence at the convention. Here are some in-person notes from the event.

(1) Hulk Hogan was there signing autographs and taking photos on two of the days of the convention. He was charging $80 for a picture and a personalized autograph. When I saw him, no one was in line, and other eyewitnesses say he was seemingly upset that people were not paying for a memorable moment with the Hulkster.

(2) There were numerous attendees sporting wrestling shirts. I asked them if they attended the WWE Panel. They seemed really excited to see Sting in-person and wondered if he would eventually wrestle. The company picked a good event to announce Sting's participation in the video game. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the panel.

(3) There was a booth that was full of wrestling memorabilia and there were numerous booths that had old wrestling magazines categorized with the rest of their comics, etc. It was cool to see some of the magazines I grew up with. This is an excellent place for collectors of wrestling memorabilia to find rare items. I loved seeing the collection of action figures beautifully displayed in glass casing.

(4) Numerous attendees were dressed in wrestling costumes including Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, etc. This shows how powerful the creative team was at the time and how timeless those characters from that era are. Thankfully, WWE has recently shifted towards more colorful characters again instead of the generic underwear models we saw for so many years.

(5) My favorite wrestling moment of the convention was when I was trying to push the pre-order of a video game to a guy with a noticeably deep voice. After he politely declined to order the latest Assassin's Creed game, I realized that he looked familiar. It was Ken Anderson, better known as former WWE Superstar Mr. Kennedy.

I suggest all wrestling fans and non-wrestling fans to attend Comic Con at least once because it is a week you will never forget.
