Madison, Wis.
Report by Erik, PWTorch reader

I attended Madison's WWE house show, which drew about a half-to-two-thirds-full crowd to the Veterans Coliseum. The show was a good one that kept the crowd generally lively across the card. It ended with what could be a bit of news that, if serious, could affect future plans on and off TV, when John Cena suffered what by all appearances was a legit and serious eye injury early in his main event match with Bray Wyatt.

(1) WWE tag champs The Usos beat Luke Harper & Eric Rowan to retain the Tag Titles. Good back and forth on this one. The crowd really responded to the Usos and their calls and response. Harper and Rowan are a great heel team and even more impressive in person. It was also fun watching WWE personnel not so sneakily run them out under black sheets while the crowd was "distracted" by swirling spotlights to get them under the ring for their "sudden" appearance.

(2) Adam Rose beat Heath Slater. This was a fun comic match to start with. The crowd was really unsure who to cheer. One pocket of fans chanted "We Want Heath!" to which he stopped and responded, "Me too!" After a bit of back and forth, Rose's forehead busted open the hard way and the ref put on rubber gloves to finish the match. After he won, Rose and his posse did his victory lap.

(3) Rusev (w/Lana) beat R-Truth. Truth was way over with the crowd, but we knew what was coming. Rusev is even more of a beast in person.

(4) Nikki Bella & Eva Marie beat Aksana & Rosa. This was a fan's choice with voting via text for a dance-off or tag match. Tag match won and we were treated to a usual Divas bout.

(5) U.S. champion Sheamus beat The Miz to retain the U.S. Title. After getting cheered on his walk-out, Miz cut a clearly heel promo to let fans know his face run was not returning with him. He played the pretty boy movie star role throughout the match even grabbing the mic to demand that Sheamus not hit him in his money-making face. Sheamus won with the Brogue Kick after favoring a likely worked thigh injury.

(6) Los Matadores & El Torito beat 3MB (Jinder Mahal & Drew McIntyre & Hornswoggle) in a six-man tag match. Since he's playing a heel, no mention tonight of Hornswoggle hailing from Wisconsin. The match focused on him and Torito for the funny spots with a pay off of Hornswoggle losing his big fake mullet as they lost and Torito wearing it out of the ring.

(7) IC champion Bad News Barrett beat Big E. to retain the Intercontinental Title. Good back and forth action from these two big guys.

Next was John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt in the main event. Bray and the Wyatts did their "We're Here" lantern walk-in and Cena blew the roof off with his entrance - this was definitely a kid-filled Cena crowd.

(8) John Cena beat Bray Wyatt in No Holds Barred main event. Close to a minute into the match, Cena caught a punch wrong and went down hard grabbing his eye and writhing in what looked like legit pain from a spot that did not call for this kind of reaction. Suddenly the ref was hanging out of the ring to talk to two trainers who ran out from the back while Cena crumpled in the corner and Wyatt stalled. Then, the trainer jumped in the ring and started tending to Cena while the Wyatts all looked around confused as to what to do. (See attached photos.) We all thought it could be a work, but when Cena got up a bit woozy to test if he could continue, the trainer actually stayed inside the ring to evaluate the next two spots which was weird. He continued on through the match, which was physical. After the Usos came down and chased Luke and Eric to the back, Cena and Bray protected that side of his face the rest of the way out, as they went out into the crowd, bumped into barriers, the steel steps, a botched table spot, and a few chair shots to the back. Cena won with an AA to Wyatt through another table.

The most telling piece to the injury being real was that Cena bolted to the back after the win, without thanking the crowd or spending time slapping hands with the kids that had all run down to the ring. If it was serious, good on him for finishing the match. But it'll be interesting to see if the injury has any affect on the Sunday house show that has the same scheduled main event or even TV. If it's something that keeps him off TV, while Bryan is, too, WWE has some top-name face issues to work out.
