Lucha Libre USA "Masked Warriors 2012" show report
May 12, 2012
Round Rock, Tex. at Dell Diamond
Report by Joe Lifer, long-time PWTorch reader
I went to the show Saturday night for Lucha Libre USA at Dell Diamond in Round Rock (Austin). It was a fun little show with some great high-flying action. Former WWE Diva Melina was advertised for this show, but she was nowhere to be found. This was not explained. I was there for Chavo Guerrero and Shane Helms anyways, so fine by me.
(1) "Firewall" Jon Recon won a 10-man-or-so battle royal that opened the night. Recon won fairly easily. He then cut a promo about how R.J. Brewer is the greatest wrestler in history and how they hate illegal immigrants, Mexico, etc., which got major heat as the crowd was heavily Mexican.
(2) Octagoncito beat Mini Park and El Oriental in a triple threat match. Mini Park and El Oriental pretty much teamed up the whole match except to break up pinfalls. This was probably the best match of the night, as these guys were flying all over the place. Octagoncito got the victory.
Following the second match, Chavo Guerrero came out to a HUGE pop. He said he was proud of his Mexican heritage and Guerreros were not afraid of anyone. He said they always challenge the biggest and the baddest no matter how tough they are. He told Jon Recon to get his butt out here so he could kick it. Jon Recon brought a wooden baseball bat out and left it ringside.
(3) Chavo Guerrero beat Jon Recon via DQ. During the match, Recon went to use the bat, but the referee stopped him. Later, the ref got knocked out and Chavo grabbed the bat. As the referee was coming to, in a classic homage to Eddie Guerrero, he tossed Recon the bat and flopped to the ground, which got Recon DQ'ed to win the match. My fiancee, friends, and I all loved the finish.
(4) Mascarita Dorada beat Sydistiko. Dorada was dressed up in all Dr. Pepper 10 attire (they sponsored the event), and carried a can of soda to the ring with him. Dorada beat Sydistiko after drinking some of the soda and powering up.
Following this, there was a 20-25 minute intermission. (Really?) It began to rain a little, but it fortunately stopped, as this was an outdoors show at the Dell Diamond baseball park.
Back from intermission, former WWE Diva Jillian Hall came out to say she was here to sing. She is just as bad as when she was with WWE with her singing. Rocky Romero then came out and said that she sung like an angel and Austin obviously doesn't know real talent. Rebecca Reyes then came out to say that the crowd wanted to see her, then she attempted a sexy little dance, which got some cheers. Next, Shane Helms came out and said that Jillian does sing like an angel - an angel of death and even Lucifer was an angel at one point. This set up a mixed tag match of Jillian & Rocky Romero vs. Rebecca Reyes & Shane Helms. Before the match could even start, Romero and Jillian attacked Helms and his knee, which he sold the life out of and was helped backstage. This turned the match into an unofficial two-on-one handicap match. Helms was limping to the ring before this, so I'm not sure if he was really banged up or not previously.
(5) Hurricane Helms & Rebecca Reyes beat Rocky Romero & Jillian Hall. Midway through the match, Reyes was being dominated when the lights went out, a gust of wind blew (it couldn't have been better timed), and the jumbotron said, "There's a Hurricane" coming. Out came Helms with his Hurricane mask on to enter the match. A minute or two went by, then Helms and Reyes won.
(6) LLUSA champion Lizmark, Jr. beat Latin Lover to retain the LLUSA Hvt. Title. Latin Lover drove the ladies wild. Pretty good back and forth action. Latin Lover got his trunks pulled down, exposing his thong, which I could've done without seeing, but it seemed to go over well with the crowd, especially the kids and ladies. The finish saw Lizmark, Jr. roll up LL and holded the ropes for the 1-2-3.
In the main event, R.J. Brewer came out with Jon Recon to face Magno. If Brewer won, Magno would be unmasked, but if Magno won, then Brewer would have to wear a mask.
(7) Magno beat R.J. Brewer (w/Jon Recon). Again another solid match with back and forth action. Brewer was able to pin Magno while Recon held down his legs. The announcer said that now Magno would be unmasked due to the stipulations. However, another ref came running down to explain to the other official what had happened. (I guess it's okay for Chavo and Lizmark, Jr. to cheat and get away with it, but not Brewer.) The announcer said that this match would continue and Jon Recon had ten seconds to get away from ringside or Brewer would be disqualified. He was mad, but went to the back. A few minutes later, Magno got the win and Brewer was out cold. Magno put a mask on him and carried him around like dead weight to the crowd's applause. He then spilled water on him to revive him, to which Brewer freaked out that he was wearing a lucha mask and ran backstage.
The announcer thanked the fans for coming out to close the show and the tour. Overall, a fun way to spend a Saturday night and we really lucked out with the weather. I'd go back again - for $10-20 you can't complain.
