Rockford, Ill.
Report by Brandon Austin, PWTorch reader
The Metrocentre was pretty packed on Saturday night. It wasn't exactly sold-out, but it had a great turn out.
(1) Mark Henry defeated Zack Ryder. The crowd was hot for Henry. Big pop for him, then match was virtually a squash. It was literally a couple of minutes, but fun to see Mark dominate.
-- Next was a Cutting Edge segment with Edge the host and Sheamus the guest. Edge came out and cut a promo on how Rockford was terrible. Then, WWE champ Sheamus came out. Sheamus and Edge went on to talk negatively about the WWE fans and John Cena. Suddenly, the lights flickered and one of the Bella Twins came out to tell the audience the main event between Cena and Sheamus has been changed to a lumberjack match by orders of the new Raw GM. Edge wished Sheamus good luck and left while Sheamus left in anger.
(2) The Great Khali defeated William Regal. Another squash match. Regal and Khali spent the entire opening just playing to the crowd and trying to get the crowd pumped up. Khali eventually chopped Regal for the pin.
(3) Divas champion Alicia Fox defeated Eve to retain the Divas Title with Santino as special referee. The show really started to pick up with this match. The crowd was kind of dead, but both Divas wrestled hard. Santino really had the crowd laughing throughout the match by flirting with Eve. Alicia ended up faking another injury and caught eve off-guard to nail the Scissors Kick for the victory.
(4) Edge defeated Evan Bourne. This was possibly the match of the night with a great back-and-forth battle between these two. It was an excellent match. Bourne really has potential to be successful into the main event scene because he is just a phenomenal wrestler. For the finish, Edge caught Evan off the top turnbuckle after Evan missed with Air Bourne to gain the pinfall. After the match, Edge attempted the spear, but Bourne dodged and Edge went right into the railing on the outside. Bourne eventually hit the Air Bourne to give the crowd a happy ending to the match. Edge was great selling an injury after Air Bourne, I may add.
(5) Unified tag champions Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd & D.H. Smith) beat the Usos (Jey & Jimmy Uso) to retain the Unified tag titles. An amazing tag team match here and a great showcase of what four young talents have to offer. The crowd was very much pro-Hart Dynasty. The match was mostly controlled by the Harts, but the Usos had their moments as well. Hart Dynasty used the Hart Attack for the victory to retain the titles.
(6) U.S. champion The Miz beat John Morrison and Ted DiBiase in a three-way match to retain the United States Title. The Miz came out before the match and cut a promo on how he is the best and how you have to be smart to be champion. He definitely had the most heel heat of the night. The match was great with a nice showcase of skills by all three men and the crowd was really behind Morrison. The finish had Morrison hitting his finisher on DiBiase, but Miz entered the ring to give Morrison the Reality Check for the victory.
(7) WWE champion Sheamus vs. John Cena went to a No Contest in a Lumberjack match. The match started out with Cena and Sheamus in the ring when Justin Roberts got on the mic and announced the lumberjacks were The Nexus. Big heat for those guys, but Cena had the biggest reaction of the entire night. It was your typical Cena match where he was pounded until making a comeback. Nexus also pounded away on Sheamus and Cena when they were both outside the ring. Near the end of the match, Cena had Sheamus in the STF and Nexus entered the ring. Chaos ensued while Sheamus high-tailed it. Once Cena was down, WWE Superstars one after another came out and eventually fought off Nexus. The Superstars stood tall and left the crowd happy.
Overall, it was an okay show. It ended great and Nexus received some strong reactions. I was also surprised to see in-person how much The Miz has developed as a heel.
Babyface Pops:
(1) John Cena
(2) Mark Henry
(3) Evan Bourne
