WWE Supershow house show results
June 19, 2010
New York City at Madison Square Garden
Reports by Jonathan Lucas & Erin Pones, Ashly Law, and Gabriel Contreras, PWTorch readers
The night began with the national anthem. Music only, no singing.
(1) Intercontinental champion Kofi Kingston beat Drew McIntyre to retain the IC Title. Kofi got a huge pop, plus chants of "KO-FI, KO-FI!" throughout the match. Kofi won via the SOS to keep the title. Following the match, McIntyre attacked Kofi. Matt Hardy ran out of the stands and saved Kofi. The referees chased him around, but he hit the Twist of Fate on McIntyre. Solid opener.
(2) MVP & Christian beat Straight Edge Society (Luke Gallows & Masked Man w/Serena). SES walked out first to not much of a reaction. Good heat when they made their SES hand signal, though. MVP was out next and the crowd gave him a decent pop. Christian walked out to a mediocre reaction. MVP and Christian won after MVP hit the "play of the day."
Kelly Kelly was introduced as the guest host. She asked the crowd, "So far, there have been 26 WrestleManias, but where was WrestleMania I held?" Some kid answered, "NYC," and got to be the guest bellringer for the next match.
(3) Kane beat C.M. Punk. Punk came out, accompanied by Serena. He had the mic and said he was the best ever. Good heat from the promo. Kane came out to a decent pop, but Kofi's was bigger. Kane won after hitting the chokeslam. Good match. The faces are three for three.
(4) U.S. champion The Miz beat R-Truth, Evan Bourne, and Mark Henry in a Fatal Four-way match to retain the U.S. Title. The Miz came out and cut a solid promo. He got great heat, including a line about "the challengers will never eeeevvverr take his championship away, just like how the Knicks will never get LeBron James!" That got a big response. His promos are definitely top notch. Evan Bourne, then Mark Henry, then R-Truth walked out, who was over with his intro song. Henry hit the World's Strongest Slam on Bourne. Bourne hit the Air-Bourne on R-Truth, but Miz pulled off Bourne and covered Henry for the win. Miz retained the title, becoming the first heel of the night to win. Good preview of tomorrow night's PPV.
(5) World Hvt. champion Jack Swagger beat Big Show in a No DQ match to retain the World Hvt. Title. Jack Swagger came out first to not much of a reaction. Big Show came out next to a SOLID pop and the crowd was behind him the whole match. The crowd really enjoyed when the Big Show slapped Swagger's chest. Right before he did, he called for silence from the crowd, and the crowd obliged. Good fun. Big Show was primed to win, but Kane interfered and gave Big Show a chokeslam. Swagger then covered and got the win, retaining the title. Kane was heading back, but he turned around, returned to the ring, and chokeslammed Swagger. After Big Show and Swagger both awoke from their chokeslams, Big Show gave Swagger the big right hand and knocked him out.
[Intermission]
(6) Divas champion Eve Torres & Bella Twins beat Co-Women's champions Lay-Cool (Michelle McCool & Layla) & Maryse in a six-Divas tag match with Santino Marella as special referee. There was no real crowd reaction for any of these Divas, although people were behind Eve. The crowd definitely got frisky during the match, alternating between cheering, "This is boring" and "This is stupid." Eve and the Bellas won (although the "this is boring" fans won the more important battle of the chants).
(7) Randy Orton beat Edge. Edge came out first to the biggest pop of the night to this point. People seemed to forget he's a top heel now. Randy Orton came out next to an even bigger pop. Solid support for Orton. This was a really entertaining match. Lots of finish teases before Orton won with the RKO.
(8) WWE champion John Cena beat Sheamus to retain the WWE Title. Sheamus came out to huge heat. He is really pale and looks huge in person. Cena came out to the biggest pop of the night, by far. It was stunning. Sheamus dominated early and then Cena hit his shoulder blocks and Five Knuckle shuffle. He was about to hit the Attitude Adjustment, but Wade Barrett emerged and walked towards the ring. Sheamus temporarily got the advantage, but Cena recovered, hit the AA, and got the pinfall.
Post-match: Barrett entered the ring and attacked Cena. The rest of the NXT crew came into the ring and started beating up Cena. The whole crowd was on their feet. This wasn't as good as the NXT invasion on Raw, but was really fun. After a minute of the NXT crew working over Cena, most of the locker room (Edge, Orton, Kofi, Bourne, Mark Henry) ran into the ring and attacked the NXT Rookies, clearing out the ring.
Cena closed out the show saying that MSG is the "heart and soul of the WWE" and he knew that we would have stormed the barricades to help him out if necessary.
Overall thoughts: some good matches, and a really fun night. There could have been more mic work (from Swagger, for instance), but this was a house show, so it was expected. It was good that the final match continued the NXT invasion angle to set up tomorrow night's PPV.
Biggest pops in order:
(1) Cena
(2) Orton
(3) Edge
(4) Big Show
(5) Kofi
Biggest Heat:
(1) Sheamus
(2) The Miz
(3) C.M. Punk
